thanks Andrew it is not as easy as Tim makes it seem

Dazzlingly bright light - just like being at the coast!

:-O:-O I posted this on another forum and they complained there were not enough dark darks and lighter lights to "increase resolution" They live in a landlocked area. I think I have it about right here for the bright overcast it portrays, but it could have more shadow too. I'm leaving this tho, I like it as it for once.

Yep. If you're happy with it leave it alone. I think artists who actually progress in their art often do it in jumps, then plateaus, then jumps, etc. Sometimes the jumps in progress may not be as refined as some of the plateau work. But the artist knows, even if no one else does, that they just made a big jump.

The thing that most strikes me in this is the size of the bird in proportion to the space it's in. It's large! And bold. I think that's great. I can't remember for sure but my recollection is that often when you put birds in an environment they tend to be small. I could be completely wrong but that's my recollection.

This strikes me as a nice, large bold portrayal of a bird in a real environment. I'd guess it will be the stepping stone to many more. And coastal light really is bright. I don't see any problem with it at all. Just sit back and enjoy it.

this is #36 of my 100 wave studies in progress at WC link is on my last post...Its actually starting to come along now...this part of the series was focused on how to get the wave reflecting in the water below. this is the 4th one trying for that and this is successful imo....

I also got the rocks in very loose in the underpainting and mostly left that alone with a few touches of reflected color on top it reads well with no effort, see detail....

8x10 oil on panel 64 to go

I just opened these, and the laptop shot across the desk!:eek!:

Absolute power recreated from your experience. Am shocked by the impressionistic wonder of what you do, regularly, in healthy shovel-fulls!

These studies are an explosive delight!

Visceral, and truly astonishing!:t:

well just so I don't fall off the page, here is #59 of my 100 works, I stuck in a couple of pelicans surfing over the surface like I see them do from time to time....not a great work but still marching along on the 100.

After this one I read one of my seascape books that said to continue the movement of the water into the sky so it has some connection....well that might improve this...

These new seascapes are great!
Moving right along with these Colleen. It's a pleasure to see you growing in ability here. The only thing I find in looking at this is that I wish there was just one bit of hard edge somewhere in those clouds, which of course are another huge challenge in themselves. With or without any hard edge in the clouds though this is a very satisfying painting.

Makes me want to go find an ocean somewhere......... Though I imagine I wouldn't know what to do once I sat down in front of it.

if this was a real painting Ken, I think that would be a very good idea, as the 2 parts of the piece don't work with each other here. Although this is how the sky is most of the time here, I would need to take the creative role to make the painting work and change things. The ocean is not so hot here either, and as part of the 100 it's move on not fix, or really awful results, scrape it all off and start another one.

thanks Phil.....
any ideas of what kind of bird I might put in something like this? this is an example of counter change, when light stuff turns dark, in this case spray...

I think I'm going to have to steal your approach of doing 100 paintings of a given theme...it's definitely working for you! I admire your dedication and persistence, especially with plein air oils. Watercolors are my default medium because the cleanup is so easy. But I really want to start doing more oils. Great job on the series.

welcome back can't wait to catch up on the thread...

didn't you do the 100 birds thing I started on WC?

not all are plein air, a lot are from my photos so I can memorize what is happening to the water so when I do go out I can tell what's happening it all goes too fast otherwise.
