There have been several western hummingbirds in Buncombe County in recent days. I photographed one this morning in the northern end of the county at 2600 feet:
Along with this likely young male Rufous, is a lethargic Ruby-throated Hummingbird, (or an unlikely Black-chinned), perching and feeding sometimes with eyes half closed.
I also know of one confirmed Rufous, banded in our yard in October, and now visiting a different feeder. Another, seen in the southern part of the county, has yet to be photographed.
Birders on the coast are used to wintering hummingbirds, mostly Ruby-throats. We here in the mountains are beginning to regularly have cold weather hummers as well.
