...or perhaps a new build for a second brood?
The Buzzard was overhead throughout the process but I'm sure he had his eyes on the multitude of young rabbits that are knocking about.

I was eager to try my repaired lens out but with an non fixable electronic cable release I was loathe to venture too far.
I managed a couple of garden pictures of common birds between showers though. I think I can assume that the lens is working correctly as these seem fairly sharp (whilst noisy because of the lack of sunlight) to me.

We saw three Buzzards (at once) over the fields this morning when my brother and I were working on the weeds etc. I assume it was the resident pair with this year's offspring. We got everything done quite early and sat in the lounge drinking coffee for a while. Anyway, my brother left and wandered up the garden to his car (parked in the field gate way). Suddenly my mobile phone rang and he whispered to me to get out there and fetch the camera. I managed a few shots before the bird noticed me and flew off (leaving another bird on a nearby telegraph pole watching the proceedings).

I think I've sorted out who is who now.
The one watching over from the telegraph pole is the male adult. I've just been to the end of the garden again and as I arrived the female (the largest bird) flew off and circled overhead calling continually while this year's juvenile continued to eat and see off the marauding Magpies.
Here are some more pictures... however, I realise they're not waders and probably won't excite the majority of my birding associates. ;)

This Weekend

Since it's gone a lot colder things have been much busier in the garden yesterday and today ... or it could just be that I'm here in daylight at the weekend :-O

Anyway, apart from the expected Blue & Great Tits there has been:

Blackcap - male & female
Bullfinch - at least 4 (2 males, 2 females)
Coal Tit - 2
Long-tailed Tit - rather oddly only one
Chaffinch (not at all regular here) - at least 5
Greenfinch - 3+
Goldfinch - 2+
Dunnock - 2
Starling - 20+

Lots of food out, cat not out much in daylight. Wish I could say the same for the neighbours cats tho' ... :C

Joking apart things are very quiet recently in the garden with only 2 chaffinch last week. My first Blackcap (male) this winter was seen feeding on the remnants of the rowan berries. Above redpoll, siskin and goldfinch. Late this afternoon a flock of long tailed tits, coal tit and a goldcrest. Also very few Blackbirds would indicate that the breeders have left and wintering birds have not yet arrived or are feasting on the berry harvest elsewhere.

Waxwing in my garden

I had a Waxwing in my garden today, but unfortunately I was at work so didn't see it. My mother and brother saw it in the top of a small Oak tree, but it didn't stay long. When my mother went to fetch her camera, it flew off. Lets hope it returns for the weekend.

Having seen both Redwings and Fieldfares drinking from the waterfall down the far end of the garden during yesterday's snowstorm, I thought I'd set up the camera in the conservatory for a while this morning. This solitary Redwing vied for prime spot with one of our resident Blackbirds before everything went rather quiet as a rather less welcome visitor arrived. Images taken through double glazing, of course.

Not got any bragging rights to play for today either... I was kinda hoping me babbies could do to the Tesco carrier baggies what we did to the bluenoses last weekend!

Plenty of redwings out the front of my house today Sy, feeding on the pyrocantha. I'd have taken a draw against the boggies, but at least we will not be subject to the 'curse' of the 'bottom club at Cristmas !!
