The last few days have moved the list on to 3450, with two of the days only adding 2 and another only 4, so slowing the pace a little....

He did well seeing Mount Kupe Bushshrike and Crossley's Ground Thrush in a day, both pretty tough birds. He did well with Cameroon Francolin, not very often seen at all these days.

Never one to turn down a challenge. The Africa Bird List is c2,580 of which he has seen c550 species already. The current record did the following:-

Current Record – 1092 additions – c86 days
Ethiopia – 482 additions – c25 days
Ghana – 224 additions – c18 days
Kenya – 7 additions – c2 days
Malawi & Zambia – 98 additions – c19 days
Namibia – 22 additions – c3 days
South Africa – 259 additions – c20 days

This Attempt – 79 days
Ghana – list of 762 - in 9 days, say 150 additions
Cameroon – list of 942 species - in 10 days, say 200 additions
South Africa – list of 831 – in 18 days, say 200 additions
Madagascar – list of 265 species - in 10 days, 100 additions
Kenya – list of 1,118 species - in 7 days, 200 additions
Zambia – list of 757 - in 3 days, say 50 additions
Malawi – list of 592 - in 12 days, 150 additions
Ethiopia – list of 836 species - in 10 days, say 250 additions

So - 1,300 species and the record broken on the last day in Ethiopia. B :)

OK - that's deliberately over-egged - probably. 3:) It is based on very little knowledge indeed!

All the best

So Ghana and Cameroon now done.

Ghana - 294 additions from 8 days
Cameroon - 97 additions from 9 days
Total - 391 additions from 17 days

A few write ups now added:-

South Africa for three weeks next. Anyone with a prediction? I'm still trying to work on an overall world spreadsheet separating the species into regions. 3:)

All the best

A couple of nice birds there, one of which Eastern Long-billed Lark, I've heard but never seen (incompetence basically) and Buff-streaked Chat and Cape Griffon are good to see. It'll be interesting to see the rest of his South African itinerary as it unfolds.

cheers, alan

Well someone is - he already has Buffy 'in the bag' on his first day in SA,

That's not fair! I spent 5 months birding the proverbial out of southern africa and didn't see Buffy Pipit. Well, not that I could identify anyway!

PS, well impressed by the analytical capabilities on display in this thread. Paul, if I give you a weekly shopping list could you work out which Bristol shops/supermarkets I should hit for the bargains on each item, taking into account time and fuel costs to get between them? ;)

Apologies. Not really my field of expertise. As my wife would tell you, I don't do shops. 3:)

102 additions in two days in South Africa puts him less than 800 off the 'previous record' (as it has been called).

He is in South Africa for a long time and I don't have the knowledge to know when he will start slowly down significantly - it must be very soon - but with the country's bird list only 831 then it's difficult to see more than a maximum of 300 additions by the end of his time there taking into account overlaps, time of year, etc?

Anyone with the inclination to compare his species recorded to date with the South African list?

All the best

He's making good progress, but I'm interested in how many of these birds will prove to be important once he has visited more of Africa. OK, you do need see these dry zone savanna birds somewhere but there seem to be few key birds. On a 3 week South African specialities clear-up, I'm not sure you would include Kruger, superb as it is. One worth thinking about for future record chasers?

cheers, alan
