No news since arriving in Mahajanga on 30th July. I wonder how the last three days have gone....

All the best

I guess there is no Internet at all away from Mahajanga. Some good birds up there at Ampijaroa but probably won't have time for the really hard to get to stuff elsewhere, eg Mad Pochard.

cheers, alan

After 2 full days in the NW he is now back in Tana, on 3802.

I've scanned the list and he seems to have more or less cleared up the expected forest birds at the main site with all the key goodies, eg Fish-eagle, Van Dam's Vanga, White-breasted Mesite and Schlegel's Asity. He clearly didn't have time to do the Estuary (Bernier's Teal) or more remote sites (Sakalava Rail, Mad Pochard) but I think he's done the right thing there - 2 days probably the correct call. Now perhaps overland to Ifaty, via Perinet and Ramanofana and fly back?

cheers, alan

28 more added in the last two days with Perinet looking like a good venue - I know nothing about Madagascar except that the distances are pretty huge so it looks like pretty good going to me. He'll surely top 4k before leaving Africa, just how many more will he get?

Not bad, but only one ground-roller is a bit disappointing.

This made me smile and sums up birders generally. He has seen the best part of 4,000 species in seven months and our natural reaction is to think about what he hasn't seen because that is how we would be thinking in the same position. I'm exactly the same!

All the best

My guess is that he will move on to Ramanofana area (1-2 days) and could still bag Rufous-headed, Pitta-like and Short-legged there (I saw all three there) and then down to Ifaty for Long-tailed. Given he won't be on Masoala, Scaly was the best one to get in the Perinet area. It will be interesting to see if he does cram Ramanofana and a South-west sortie (1-2 days?) into his final four days. Lot's of travelling there and a risk on the travel with a flight to Kenya, if he did do Ifaty.

Lots of good birds added at Perinet, with the Ibis, Scaly GR, Collared Nightjar and the LEO amongst the best IMO. I think he is doing very well there given the limited time.

cheers, alan

Two bad days?

Something must have gone wrong; he surely would have done at least one of Ramanofana or the far South-west (Ifaty etc) in his remaining time. My guess would be a cancelled flight to Ifaty but even then you could do a taxi-brousse to Ramanofana for a couple of days? That would be better than twiddling your thumbs around Tana, seeing next to nothing.

cheers, alan

Well the final tally was 76 additions in 8 days for Madagascar and due to be in Kenya tomorrow according to the link. 509 species to go to beat the current record. The plan on the website says:-
Kenya – 7 days
Zambia – 3 days
Malawi – 12 days
Ethiopia – 10 days

However, the link above says - "Meanwhile, tomorrow begins a full month in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania — the big year rolls on!".................?

All the best
