World Yearlist Record Attempt (1 Viewer)

Given his age and background I don't think he is probably in such a hurry that he needs to get an additional 2,000 new lifers next year :)

It was simply a guess at how many could be achieved in a second year after getting 6K in the first and based on the approximate ages of those World listers in the 7-8K range.

basically, he could achieve a pretty impressive World list comparable to most in just two years rather than the lifetime it takes most!

Can you fly direct NZ - Fiji? or NZ - Noumea? Surely Fiji, West Samoa and New Cal would nail it? Hawaii cross Pacific would offer a lot less.

Lots of New Zealanders have property in Fiji, so I would think this link must be established. Isn't NZ also the gateway to New Caledonia? Larry wasn't that your route?

I think he would struggle to get 1000 new in another year - this year is the ultimate skimming trip, ie getting the commonest 60-80% of birds in any one location. Other than a few places already mentioned, he would have to go back to almost all the same countries and even the same sites. And we aren't sure how many heard only he has - most world listers don't count heard onlys on their life lists..

cheers, alan

Western Australia? Much he could get there?

I think he would pretty comfortably crack the 6000 spending the remainder of his time in south-west WA and Darwin - great birds in both areas and many endemics or semi-endemics. It is wet season on Darwin, not sure what the weather has done this year, could be why he has bypassed it so far. I think heading to the Pacific Islands would be riskier.

Of course he could head back to the tropical Americas and also be assured of getting them. Needs to be careful not to linger in New Zealand, there won't be too many days like his first one!

Thinking Noah's total is going to be a very tough act for Arjan to beat - not least the incredible stamina and health he's has had, just that one brief episode of Delhi Belhi. What chance anyone else holding up so well?

Been distracted this evening but a train journey home to play with ebird.

The percentage of targets is significantly higher for him in Africa, Asia and Oceania. Indeed, when you take into account the 300 species that he had previously recorded but has not done so this year, I imagine that slogging the Western Hemisphere (even South America) would supply him with limited pickings.

He is only 600 behind the highest list on ebird for the Western Hemisphere but 1,760 behind the Eastern Hemisphere equivalent:-

Just checked the ebird link and Noah has had a day round wader hotspots in Auckland area from 06.45 to 18.10 for 22nd, so looks like a good day. Can't wait to see how he spends the last 9 days of the year. Quite by chance I found the Noah website just days before he started on 1st Jan so enjoyed following it all year. Now Arjan can start with a very big day in Holland with all the waders and wildfowl.
