WW 2 U Boot binocular repair (1 Viewer)

For those of you able to view the BBC iplayer you may find this afternoon's edition of “The Repair Shop” of interest. One of the items featured was a pair of WW 2 U boot binoculars acquired at the end of the war by a British Royal Navy officer as "spoils of war" from a captured U Boot commander. The binoculars, now in very poor condition, were brought to the Repair Shop where they were refurbished by their Optics expert. It's an interesting watch.

It was also very interesting to carry out over 4 days as I had to keep waiting for the camera crew to come to my bench between
all the other items that were being filmed at the same time.

Thanks for the insight, it’s one of the few programmes I watch these days.

I’ve also edited my original post to make it clear I was referring to “The Repair Shop”.

That's very interesting. Can someone please provide a link?

Only UK BBC license fee payers are legally allowed to view free to air BBC programmes and the iplayer is thus not available to non-UK residents.

There are ways around this as you’ll discover if you search the internet.

Netflix US has some episodes, but I expect not very current.
Will someone please provide Season/Episode number so I can watch the repair if/when made available? Thanks.

Very enjoyable watch - thanks Anon2020 for flagging it up (and thanks to Richard and the gent who looked to have done an excellent job of re-painting the binocular body too, of course). Shame more time could not have been devoted to them - it would have been fascinating to have had a closer look at the eyepiece lenses, for some commentary about coatings etc. But that's a fact of life with these "general interest" programmes, I guess...

Richard, was it an actual 8x60? The programme made no mention of the binocular's configuration, and from what I gather, the 7x50 looks very similar? It looked a little smaller than I expected a x60 binocular to be, but maybe all you guys are hefty lads...

Those binoculars look as though focus was adjusted by screws - did the owner ask for you to set them at a particular focus distance, or was he already aware of how to adjust them?

I look forward to your next assignment - hopefully something like a Busch 10x80 or similar!

Definitely 7x50. The eyepieces were fixed focus but could be altered by a technician if required. However as the young fit men
who used these, had 20/20 vision, they are rarely changed form the factory set up.
The repair was carried out over 4 days as I kept having to wait for my turn with the camera crew.
I agree it would have been good to show of the work but that is not the program format.
