Yellow Warbler? (1 Viewer)

Yes, both Yellow Warblers. The second image is of a second-year bird mid-moult with the grey plumage being retained feathers from last fall.

1st-year ( = 2nd calendar year)?
To my understanding/experience when using "year" in aging a bird it is always with regards to the calendar year. But I could certainly be mistaken. In this case, yes, it means second calendar year ie. hatched in 2021.

I agree with Butty on this one. Alas, as with feather numbering there's considerable confusion, perhaps mostly with gulls [hint: all the big whitish ones are one species...]

Depends what world you live in. For ringers, I'd agree with you - but this is a birder's forum rather than a ringer's or gull-nut's, and year-of-life terminology has repeatedly been considered to hold sway as the default here - as it does in major field guides and with field birders generally - and (the major winner) it's just plain more intuitive.
