Thanks Andy. Had a quick look today (without having read your response!) Did have a quick look in the field you are referring to, but didn't look closely. No look, but did see a Buzzard go across Losh, plus for the mammal recorders this year, nearly killed a Hare that ran out in front - fortunately I missed him.

I did see a group of GP's whilst driving back to Wetherby today, perhaps circa 50, two fields south of the Ramada. They often used to be in the first field next to the Ramada, but the farmer may have changed the crop in the last couple of years, as I haven't seen them there.

Losh looked fairly quiet - Mute Swan, Mallards, Coots, but only a five minute view. Three Grey Herons together in nearby fields.

Hi Lawts

Those fields have some really deep depressions and the birds could quite easily have been in those, i drove round to the other side and had a look off the bridge opposite losh and looked back towards losh but facing into the icy wind and rain yesterday made viewing very difficult. I had 2 Hares in the fields along the road to losh yesterday too...

Cheers Andy

Had Rough-leg Buzzard today. Also Merlin, Peregrine, 2+ Ringtails, Marsh Harriers and Bewick's Swans. Nothing at all to do with Yorkshire as I was on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent!
I did get cracking views of a Brambling at North Duffield Carrs en route yesterday as I called in on the off chance of the Whoopers been about.

Read a copy of "The Dalesman" at work today (Feb 2008) and there was a report on the resurgence of otters in Yorks. Also a bit on "Autumn Watch" when Simon King went caving for bats.

On my commute today had a covey of 14 Grey Partridges on the wolds on the way there and 2 on my return. Had 4 sightings of Greys in Yorks this year and 5 all said but only 1 Red-legged and that was out of county. Thats not like normal!!

A bit rusty !
Can anyone point me at a really good Redpoll identification guide - pref on-line ? I've a small flock as regular visitors to my garden [up to 12 birds] feeding almost exclusively on Nyjer seed. They're not birds I've seen often enough to be able to distinguish the different races - which I believe can be problematic to the point of not being able to ! Any help / thoughts appreciated.

There was a long discussion on the ID forum recently <here>

Rumbled!!!
Being such a loving and caring sort of chap, I willingly agreed to my Wife's suggestion of a trip to Ikea this am, when we were leaving I "accidently" turned right instead of left, by chance we happened to see a bloke with a big lens just opposite the Mars entrance and he was watching a couple of Waxwings, really laid back this pair, didn't even flinch when I got out of the car to have a look, eventually got back in the car and pulled up alongside the tree so the Wife could see them, "So that's why you were keen to come here" she said, "Did you find out about them on the internet?"
Wouldn't believe it was purely by chance! she did think they were "cute" though

She only spent about a tenner and she says they've changed it and made it worse, so won't be going again.

SW fairburn - still in the same spot?

Worked Dunkeswick at lunch all week.

Upton 14 Goosander
This morning a record count of 44 (possibly 51) snipe
Redpoll over twice, but not on the deck
Peregrine over Paddock House Lane was the first since 2006
No Owls though

My office is moving to Wetherby next month so it is likely Losh will become the patch of choice on a daily basis. There maybe more on there with some frequent watching from multiple watcher...Osprey I hope!

Went up to Castle Howard this afternoon for a stroll. Got amazing views of the female Scaup as it was the closest duck as soon as i got to the lake. It was being courted by the male tufties. Lets hope nothing comes of that, eh! A couple of noisy Mistle Thrush greeted me as i walked along the newly cleared, northern edge of the lake. As i got further round there were plenty of displaying Goldeneyes, always a heart warming sight. On the far bank were a raft of at least 15 Goosanders with a couple walking on the bank, not a sight you see regularly. Quite a few small gulls on the lake, perhaps 2,000 but the only big gull was a 3rd-w Herring Gull. On the way back to the car had a handful of Treecreepers working the lake fringes and a Nuthatch in the small stand of pines. First i have seen at Castle Howard.

Watched a Barn Owl get a good bashing from a Herring Gull this evening. The poor owl kept trying to hunt while getting dive bombed again and again. When Barnie was about knackered, a Crow decided to join in with the mob fest.
