James is it you reporting this bird at York Uni? Do you know if there is public access to biology dep't? May try this weekend for this after missing Fulford bird.

No it isnt me but public access is easy, there are a row of alders between the lake and the biology department, i expect the redpoll is in these as there are usually siskin and redpoll in em. The campus has various pay and display car parks but also some that are permit only. The biology department is at the north of the site near wentworth college.

Had a walk around an undisclosed location in east yorkshire today with a single Red Kite and a single Buzzard. Not the highlight though - this was a wonderful Weasel ( a lifer for me) which i watched for 20 minutes plus and which wasn't scared, coming within 3 feet when i kept stock still. It was hunting a corridor of trees about 8 foot wide and kept bobbing onto the path and standing up. So comical and so brilliant. Was surprised how different to a Stoat it looked and made me realise a mustelid I nearly ran over last year was a Weasel but mostly my sightings have definitely been Stoats

Parking is actualy free at weekends in the publcily available car parks - Carpark G (Between Wentworth college and Biology) would be best - also the bird should be less disturbed at weekends as it has only been early mornings prior to the campus getting busy.

Doing a smash and grab tomorrow morning on the York bird if any of you regulars fancy joining me. I've got to be home mid-morning, so aim to be there first light and then home.

Not the most exciting birding I know, but I need him for the year after missing the Fulford bird. PM me if you fancy.

Also any directions re. where to come off A64 etc appreciated.

Come off at the Hull road turn, not the fulford one. Left at the roundabout by B & Q and right when you get to heslington. Follow th road through the uni and then park at Wentworth college. Might join you dependent on time (when were you thinking?) as im on nights.

I'm going to be there for about 7:00 but will probably be hanging around until 10:00 subject to finding, photographing etc.

If I score early and get reasonable shots, may call in at Catterton again for the Water Pipit.

Went down this morning after work and bumped into Zacatzooba down at the university. 11 or so Redpolls were present and we managed to work through them getting two likely candidates for Mealy. Both were very subtle showing marginally paler faces, less streaking to the flanks, pale shoulders and less streaked utc's (plus a slightly bulkier build). The clincher for me was that one of them sat up in the trees with a lesser Redpoll and as they both flew the Lesser showed a brown rump whilst the Mealy showed a pale rump (albeit streaked). The birds are mainly feeding under the alders on the ground much in the manner of a Snow Bunting flock rolling across the ground. Definitely not as easy as the breeding condition male I had in Fulford i January but good for learning. Also knocking about were a Great Crested Grebe, Goldfinch, Greenfinch and a varied assortment of plastic wildfowl.

These birds are defo. early morning birds. Realised last night I had to drop my daughter at work in Leeds so wasn't going to bother. Saw the report on Birdguides for 08:30 and thought I'd give it go.

Got there about 09:15. Blasted Hotspur from his slumbers just as he was trying to nod off to check was in the right place (apologies again). No sign of any redpoll sp.

A small flock of Goldfinch were present but that was it. Oh there was a mixed flock of about fifty Snow (Blue and White morph) and Barnacle Geese as well.

Seems as soon as these repoll are disturbed that's it for the day. Should have listened to Ingsbirder.

I was thinking of going early tomorrow for some photos (hopefully) if I park in 'G' car park, how would I get to the birds?

Anyone near Broomhill Flash, it was full of Goldeneye yesterday. The males are looking magnificent. There were three males and about five or six females.

If you open up the link of the campus map, head on the path south east of the car park onto the lake front between biology and wentworth, next to the nighltine building. The alders run north around the edge of the lake for about 150 yards or so. The Redpoll were feeding underneath these on the deck this morning.
