Thats a definite lesser whitethroat. Been a fall the last few days of em. Called in at Swine Moor today. Wood Sandpiper was a UK first for me and Swift was a year tick. Also saw a few White Wags

Went to Blacktoft ( the weather knows when I have time off work ) and it was a lot colder than expected, should have worn warmer gear. Nothing special, no sign of spoonbill or garganey. Lots of avocet, blackwits, some marsh harriers but probably the best were 5 spotted redshank in summer clobber. Still haven't seen bearded tits though. Went to Fairburn after and got a distant little egret. Year firsts were, swift, house martins, sedge and reed warblers and some of the above.

When there's better weather I may bike up to Eccup Whin. Been in the area before without really knowing much about it but it sounds worthwhile.

Stayed out in calderdale after work 4 year ticks in total;

Soil Hill - No Dotterel, but , 2 swift ,3wheatear and 3LRP, plenty of skylark and mipit at fairly close quarters.

Moved on to Warley Res; 5 Common Sandpiper, curlew and Golden Plover.

Finally on getting into the car with batteries empty I get SEO quartering the moors on either side of the road, some ace views, warmed the batteries but pics were pants.

Finally managed to find time to log on and catch up with your posts. Nice to see most have got the KE - hope James does. Really busy at work at the moment - frustratingly I'm on a course in Chester, and would ordinarily have picked up Black-winged Stilt and/or Cattle Egret but travelling with someone else so no can do.

Anyhow, The King Eider was a killer. I couldn't go on Friday even though I had all afternoon off - was helping to prepare for my daughter's eighteenth. Despite the party I was on my way to Flamborough at 04:15 and was the third car in the car park arriving just after first light. Spent a while on Breil Nook before news came through that it was at North Landing - what a killer walk that was. Saw him well enough but no decent photos. Took some nice shots of the auks etc. - love the orange gape on Razorbill. Nice to see Daz Ward and his wife, who'd just managed to clock the KE. Frustratingly, I left before the Hoopoe had been found.

Headed to Swine Moor. Had just found a couple of White Wag's when bumped into Graham (Bitterntwisted). Together we clocked a Lesser Whitethroat - close enough to hear the pre-warble before the rattle. We both finally got on the Lesser Yellowlegs which was proving elusive at times, as well as Whimbrel. The LY was very smart despite half his legs being dark with the mud. Much more elegant and longer legged than the accompanying Redshanks, with quite a bold super, especially when seen front on.

I would have loved to have stayed for wood Sand etc. but kept in the good books and did a family walk up to the Apostle Stones (no Dotterel) on Ilkley Moor in the afternoon. Healthy numbers of Willow Warbler and a nice Green Woody.

Bizarre day really and pretty knackering. Really it was a one bird day for me, and I got him!

I have booked Firday off work. Was thinking of a dawn blast at Bolton Abbey. Realy want to try and get some redstart pictures. Does anyone know a better spot?

Anyone go out this morning, it looked perfect for anyone looking for gropper etc.

It might have been perfect when you got up, but at 5.15AM it was very cold and foggy and I had no luck with Gropper, although I did get wonderful close sunlit views of Chiff, Blackcap, Whitethroat and Sedge when the sun broke through. And remarkable views of a pair of Lesser Whitethroats all loved up and displaying. Plus a GSW making a right racket drumming on a railway signal post.

I'm planning an early morning at John O'Gaunts Reservoir to look for Redstart. http://www.multimap.com/map/browse....=0&scale=100000&multimap.x=251&multimap.y=243 Had a pleasant stroll there a few weeks ago and thought it looked good habitat for them and then found this.. http://www.bradfordbirding.org/SITES/Beaverdke.html Unlikely to have Wood Warbler or Pied Fly like Bolton Abbey but habitat at John O'Gaunt' s should make viewing easier with patience. Also Little Owl and good mix of common passerines, waders, ducks.
