Finally managed to find time to log on and catch up with your posts. Nice to see most have got the KE - hope James does. Really busy at work at the moment - frustratingly I'm on a course in Chester, and would ordinarily have picked up Black-winged Stilt and/or Cattle Egret but travelling with someone else so no can do.
Anyhow, The King Eider was a killer. I couldn't go on Friday even though I had all afternoon off - was helping to prepare for my daughter's eighteenth. Despite the party I was on my way to Flamborough at 04:15 and was the third car in the car park arriving just after first light. Spent a while on Breil Nook before news came through that it was at North Landing - what a killer walk that was. Saw him well enough but no decent photos. Took some nice shots of the auks etc. - love the orange gape on Razorbill. Nice to see Daz Ward and his wife, who'd just managed to clock the KE. Frustratingly, I left before the Hoopoe had been found.
Headed to Swine Moor. Had just found a couple of White Wag's when bumped into Graham (Bitterntwisted). Together we clocked a Lesser Whitethroat - close enough to hear the pre-warble before the rattle. We both finally got on the Lesser Yellowlegs which was proving elusive at times, as well as Whimbrel. The LY was very smart despite half his legs being dark with the mud. Much more elegant and longer legged than the accompanying Redshanks, with quite a bold super, especially when seen front on.
I would have loved to have stayed for wood Sand etc. but kept in the good books and did a family walk up to the Apostle Stones (no Dotterel) on Ilkley Moor in the afternoon. Healthy numbers of Willow Warbler and a nice Green Woody.
Bizarre day really and pretty knackering. Really it was a one bird day for me, and I got him!
