I have booked Firday off work. Was thinking of a dawn blast at Bolton Abbey. Realy want to try and get some redstart pictures. Does anyone know a better spot?

Anyone go out this morning, it looked perfect for anyone looking for gropper etc.

Ive always had reasonable success with Redstarts in the washburn valley - lindley wood, fewston res areas simply from walking around the res's. Down by the fish farm at the bottom end of lindley (SE corner) is quite a good area.

Also, up at Scar House res, supposed to be good between the res and summerstone farm but I cant personally vouch for this.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link Marcus, it was nice seeing that as I didn't see the bird today. It had been seen early on in the day but flew north and hadn't been relocated by the time I had to leave. No sign of the tawny pipit either although a handful of wheatears and yellow wags made up for it a little. Managed to get all the usual auks including some very close views of puffins.
Got some pretty grim flight shots of fulmar and kittiwake, I wanted your camera at that point Marcus.

American Wigeon

Dave managed to dip the American Wigeon at Rother Valley today. He spoke to a regular who said it would be round the back of some island.

Anyhow, the reason for the post is this guy considers it to be dubious. He says he hasn't seen it fly in five days of watching it, although I'd query if it can't fly, how did it get there?

The company it's keeping does seem odd. Apparently it's not with Wigeon; A few Mallards, Tufteds and Gadwall.

Daz I know saw it on Saturday so it would be interesting to get his view.

From what I've heard today, I don't think I'll be in too much of a rush to go see it.

Hi Steve, Yes I did see it Saturday, but no flight, when I was there it was feeding/grazing with a male Eurasian Wigeon, all I can add...

two year ticks for me at LOSH!!! Common sandpiper and not one, but two whitethroats. Also sprawk over, and two LRP's.

Earlier fustratingly heard a redstart at yearsley, but did have 12 crossbill over. It's a great site and plenty of searching to be done here

Heading over to Tadcaster on Sunday and wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of any areas of interest around there?

Thanks in advance.

Yearsley is very good for Redstart. They frequent the area by the ponds and stream at the base of the 'valley':

and there has been Wood Warbler there in the last couple of summers. It is also one of the few 'guarenteed' places in the York area for Turtle Dove nowadays, usually in the area by the car park. The small group of Crossbills have been present for the winter as well which has been nice as there've been very few birds around recently.

As hoped, John O'Gaunts reservoir very good for Redstart. 6+ singing males, and superb views of three of them, plus two females. Would also offer photo ops of Little Owl and Treecreeper.

Bolton abbey this AM. Arrived on site at 5:45 and it was -1C!
4 Redstart (3 singing males)
9 Pied flycatcher
3 Wood Warbler
Manadarin

Spent about an hour watching one pied fly trying to get his end away. He got a bird into his box so I assume he got lucky. Graham, thanks for the message. If you pick this up today I could go back later - I came back that way too!

Marcus, like the pied flycatcher phots..

Get yourself down there Dave its awesome at the moment. There is no need even for the alarm clock if you want pix. As the light isn't really good enough until 8ish. The dawn chorus is worth it though.

If I was to go again I would nail the redstarts first as they are in an open area.

Anyone can PM me for specific directions
