Just back from Old Moor.... no joy on the swift. Plus some joker in the hide kept finding house martins and wouldn't accept that they weren't the target bird.

Didn't see you Keith. I went back for seconds tonight. Bumped into Daz and Johnny Mac.

As you say no joy tonight. Gutted for my bro. Dave. He was on site when it was showing distantly, and when it flashed across the scrape in front of the hide, just before the rain and just before I returned.

He saw the bird flash past but not enough to see features to tick it, so is doing the correct thing and leaving it. At least he got the Notts. bird.

Connected with the Spoonbill as well tonight. It is a cracking reserve - such a shame the hours of opening aren't always like tonight - the late sun was excellent for photography.

Here's hoping it's back on in the morning.

So you went back with optics??

Must say twitiching a swift at distance without optics was not the brightest move - was some reall generous fellas in the hide fortunately!

Ye I thought I'd give it a try with optics - I must say they do seem to help generally, but I actually had more luck without them, so may stick to this approach - less to carry, less chance of being mugged and fewer looks from the general public - could catch on.

Little Swift

Wow what a cracking local mega a good find for local stalwart Dave Waddington..not sure who refound it this afternoon but well done. A tricky bird to pick up on amongst the swarm of swifts over the reserve. But I got lucky soon after arriving as within 15 minutes the boy drifted off low to the east during heavy rain. It flew past the Wader Scrape hide and continued over the Main Marsh and out of sight shortly after 5PM. As the rain eased many Common Swifts returned to feed over the reserve but no further sign of the Little Swift by dark.

It had done this earlier in the day soon after its initial discovery so there is some hope for a repeat performance tomorrow. There are some suitable railway arches for a roost site at the east end of the reserve!

Also this evening the Spoonbill, Hobby and nearby 2 smart second summer Little Gulls on Broomhill Flash
