Managed to get a pass out on saturday. Fancy going to swilly ings first for the yellow legged gulls, med gull and scaup. Then maybe north cave for red crested pochard. all lifers. Also ill have to check for birds at blacktoft, never seen any stints, so i'll have to keep an eye on birdguides.

mark.

Check the tide times for Blacktoft if you want to see stints.

If the weather is kind enough I may get on the bike tomorrow for Swilly. There's a lifer in the yellow legged gulls, second ever sightings for med gulls and year ticks for dunlin. Problem is it's like gull mecca and picking them out ain't going to be easy.

Fairly good views twice this week, no sign of Wood Sands @ North Cave or Toft this afternoon, but great views of Corn Bunting @ former & flight views of Bittern @ Toft, plus scope views of Bearded Tits & plently of Wader content..

Can we tick the RC Pochard?

That's just what I'm wondering....I ain't driving that far for plastic.
I'll have a shot at Swilly tomorrow morning before work for the scaup... whereabouts was the scaup seen? from the hide or round the lake?

just checked the BOU list and RC Pochard are on there...but are the North Cave birds genuine???

As likely as any RC Pochards to be wild. Dont seem to be in eclipse (I assume they do go into eclipse) so a bit of post breeding dispersal plus with one turning up at Fairburn also it would indicate a pattern.

Yeah, but how can you say that that 'pattern' and 'dispersal' is from southern Europe and not from a local crowd of plastics? Escapee/feral RCP will also 'disperse' - that's how they escaped. To tick any RCP in Britain is kidding yourself - you can never be confident of a wild bird unless it is marked. There are a huge number of plastic RCP around, including not a million miles away from those birds.....

yeah but they are cat cish and would fit in with the other southern ducks which reach britain at this time of year ie ruddy shelduck. I prefer the until proven guilty approach. If they were rarities they would be accepted unless there was proof they were escapes like the East Park bird last year. Why be negative about them? Yes they may be escapes but they may also be wild. To decide without rings is conjecture. Having said that if they come to bread I might have a rethink.

the HB leave mid to late august if successful, if not a bit earlier. The birds seen the back end of the summer are likely to be the juvs.

Agree James. They are more likely to be wild birds than escapes. When I say wild I am of course referring to cat. C birds from one of the established and completely tickable areas. They've possibly moved up from Lound which has a healthy breeding population.

If you want to get a defo. cat C bird you'd need to go to Cotswold Water Park as this population was referred to by the BOURC. However, no need not to apply the same principle to other healthy populations such as Lound. Defo. likely to be post breeding mid-summer dispersal than escapes.

Go tick 'em. Hopefully they'll be around for a while. North Cave is ideal, as is Fairburn. Hopefully breeding soon.

On a similar note I'm going for the cat c Snow Geese on Mull next year. In many ways these are better than a single bird in a flock of Pink-feet in Norfolk. At least you know they are not escapes.

If you adhere strictly to the BOURC rules as I do, then use it to your advantage and make hay....things can always change again.

Cheers for this Steve. I'm gonna go for it, so there's a bird at Fairburn is there? When did that arrive as it ain't showing on birdguidess today?

Went down to Swilly this aft for an hour, not too much of interest other than marsh harrier showing well. Something spooked the gulls and lapwings at Astley but didn't see if it was a raptor of any kind. A bit too windy for my liking, everything seemed to be lying low and I made a speedy exit when I saw the clouds gathering. I was pretty wet when I got home.
