not as easy as it sounds, mate. What if you're in East Park or on a reserve somewhere, you walk past a brider and they say "hey, there's a such and such from the next hide/round the corner", which is exactly where you were heading and couldn't have missed it. It would have been self found if you'd not met him, but now it isn't cos he's told you about it. Whaddaya do?!

The standard self-found rules used by birders at mo are on the punkbirder website. Obviously you dont have to play by these but they make a lot of sense.

How long before there's some kind of birding league with a cup final tournament?! Oh wait, uk400, bird races, I suppose it's already happened! By 2012 it could be in the Olympics. The 100 species dash around Lea Valley reserve....

Yellow Wagtail?

Hey, Can anyone tell me if any bird has a similar flight call to Yellow Wagtail?
I was out in my garden today and a bird flew over at about 100ft calling.
To me it was definate Yellow Wagtail call and it looked good for it too (Silhouette, No Bins!).
Just seems abit unlikely over East Hull...
Any thoughts appreciated...
Cheers

Thanks for the directions to "Alkbourgh", decided to head down to Spurn this afternoon, with Mrs T. Wow, Summer has arrived, sunny warm, no wind....etc. Managed 54 species, with Red Backed Shrike, Wryneck, Pied Flys, and a year tick a "Black Redstart in the Crown car park".

Question! Why do "birders" with high powered scopes, bins and cameras, have to get so close to a bird? We had just arrived at Kilnsea to see the Black Redstart, and 2 "numpties", for the want of another word, decided the view through their scope, at a range of 100 yards, was not good enougth and proceeded to get as close to the bird as possible, irrespective of the twenty other birders views....result Black Redstart, flies accross the road and disappears to sight...sorry, rant over.

Went across the bridge with mike for the phal which we dipped - the tide was right out when we got there. A few Curlew Sands and Knot didnt really make up for it. Headed back in county and stopped off at Tophill, scoring male Merlin sat in the hedgerow on the way in. We didnt see either RF Falcon or Hobby but did get RC Pochard, a bitch tick for me plus a winter plum BNG.

Hi Dave

same happened to me with the wryneck. It was quite flighty around the parade ground ,then I re-found it settled among some rosehips.
I called a birder over and a small crowd gathered and we had good views.
Unfortunately a photographer who posts regularly in the birdforum gallery wasn't satisfied with his shots so proceeded to lurch ever closer to the bird until you've guessed it, it flushed disappearing over the tps of the bushes.
Hence one bunch of pretty p.....d off birders.
Its selfish behaviour like this that gives photographers a bad name.
When will people learn?
rant over.

Martin,

My point exactly, why pay a "shed full of money" for high quality optics, and then feel the need to get within 10 feet of a bird? All my shots, yesterday, where taken at distance, and all needed a fair "crop" to make them usable, however I hope they are still acceptable images, so "lets give the birds space and use the optics for which they where designed........my last rant, I hope...

Martin, i heard about this person who obviously didn't give any consideration to other birders present at all - it p*ss*d a lot of people off - do you know his name? we should post it here - maybe he will take the hint then!

Lets hope the "birder" takes the hint, I wonder if it is one of the guys who pressed the Black Redstart on Sunday morning......? Uses a canon on a monopod with a 400mm lens.

You use a mono pod? I would not imagine for a moment that you would "crowd" a bird, have you bought your new lens yet, or are you considering moving from the "dark side" as many have and changing to Nikon?

Well done on the new lens, Canon make superb optics! Are you bolting a 1.4 convertor to your new 500mm, a chap I was with in Norfolk had one and his AF was S&^t hot......but you will need a sturdy triod even with the "IS"

Good fun on the yorks meet today - bpat trip was steady with 7 bonxies a couple of arctics and little gulls plus singles of manxie and sootie. Due to the lack of news from the coast am most of us sacked it off and went to tophill which was a good decision with hobbys all over plus relocation of the RF Falcon. Single Spotshank and BNG were also good. Im sur ethe full report will be up shortly on the thread.
