but some people call me Helen!!
I've seen them over the village here in Burley in Wharfedale. In fact, I've seen one over our back garden!! My kids had a pet rabbit which we used to let have the run of the back garden, even when we were out (he never strayed from there). I pulled up on the drive to see this Red Kite which obviously thought it'd found an easy lunch!!

Hi Richard thanks for the report of kites in Burley......will have to look out for them when I'm over your way. We see them over our garden at Holt park too.

Does everyone find it so hard identifying when first starting out or is it just me?

No, it isn't just you Helen! And I enjoy reading replies to ID questions when who I think are top birders on this site argue amicably long and loudly over a photo of, say, a buzzard/honey buzzard etc. I expect not to be able to ID these - so it's reassuring that these guys even have trouble sometimes.

Thanks for that Sandra makes me feel much better and nice to get reply from fellow female! :gh: Is it me or are there a lot more males in this game? Wonder why? :king:

Going on last weekends BF meet at Leighton Moss there were 4 ladies and 9 gentlemen... so the ratio there was roughly 2:1 which isn't bad.

A fortnight ago I tried to let you know about a raptor species in an urban area which was censored out of existence. Let's just say it was an almost repeat performance at 8.45 this morning. It attacked the same birds on the same location & then landed on the same yellow thingey.

If you look at the blog entry for 17th Feb all should become clear!

I think you've probably achieved cryptic enough with that post ;)

Had a brill day out today - 3 year ticks including a couple of self found ones. Report on the blog but visited a secret site for Woodlark, found some crossers at allerthorpe but no adders and found a Corn Bunting feeding around Black Dyke Ings.

The same site as last year's unsuccessful search for woodlark I take it James? If it is then I might just have a trip out there next week for myself.

Do self found ticks count if someone else tells you where to look?:t:

Anyone interested in the Swilly Gulls;
There are about a thousand following a tractor as it ploughs a field here. Mostly Common Gulls but larger ones about, didn't have any bins and didn't go up the path to approachbut may be worth a look.

Getting there...
I know they're getting boring now, but I had 40 self-found waxwings at the tram stop near my house this afternoon.

Shame I had to spoil this good luck by dropping my Opticron Taigas, right royally ******* up the focus wheel. And two days after my birthday... if I'd done this last week I could have got some new ones for a prezzie! :storm:

If I can borrow a car today I may head for Swilly, not in good enough physical condition to be cycling down there.
This morning's dog walk was great weather wise but no sign of the roe deer I usually see. Got year ticks with little owl and linnet, came across a group of 20 odd meadow pipits, two of the group were paler and a lightish grey colour with more white bits. Whether it was the sunlight or they were some other species I couldn't say as they are all similar looking to me.
Lapwings and curlews are getting ready for nesting by the look of things too. No sign as yet of any returning migrants here.

Chris.
