Checked out black dyke ings, lots of meadow pipits and pied wagtails. Still a few lapwings and a solitary ringed plover. When i left i noticed a lot of geese (greylags by the look) coming in to roost.

What time is bird?
Had a nice afternoon at the Strid today. A kingfisher, loads of nuthatches, treecreepers, dippers etc. to brighten up my day.

Then saw that there was a black kite close by at Blubberhouses...ouch...

North Cave Wetlands

Things starting to pick up at the Wetlands over the past few days with the first Avocets back, with 7 on Saturday, but none on Sunday which is usually the case when they first come in, as they tend to flit back and forth to the Humber for the first couple of weeks before settling down for the summer.
On Sunday 3+ Sand Martinspassed through the reserve and a late afternoon walk round produced a fine male Wheatear on the newly ploughed 'Maize Field'.
Other birds seen over the weekend were;
Green-winged Teal still present mainly on Island Lake but now spending more time on Reedbed Lake as well.
Water Rail on Reedbed lake tho elusive.
Peregine over North Field briefly on Sunday.
Buzzard upto 8 seen in air together displaying along ridge to East.
Red Kite 1 over North Field and ridge to East.

Never seen so many Brent Geese as there were at Spurn today. List of some of the other species present at Spurn on the blog - only a trickle of summer migrants so far!

Nice one - superb photo too

I've been looking out of the office window all day wishing I was out with my bins somewhere

Every day this week I'm checking every information source I have knowledge of, to see if what I'm after this Friday is still around.

Spurn - Brent Geese ( seen on 16th )
Wykeham - Great Grey Shrike ( seen on 15th )
North Cave - Green Winged Teal ( seen on 15th )
Flamborough - Hooded Crow ( seen on 15th ) need details of whereabouts
Holbeck - Med Gull ( seen recently )

The rest is just pot luck - I know the Goshawk at Wykeham is in the hands of the gods, but the entire day trip will be worth it for the Shrike

Hi Mal, the Teal has been moving onto Reedbed lake at North Cave as well as hanging around the island on island lake. The hoodies are hanging around the fields north of flamborough where Danes Dyke intercepts the Bempton road (not the southern end of danes dyke where most people go). Meds - get to Holbeck car park with a loaf of bread and you should score. Shrike - make sure you get to the bottom (southern) end of the clearing near the fenced enclosure as that is where the bird likes to kick about.

When I was there last Wednesday, the bird was staying to the clear fell just after the fenced off enclosure. Tending to stick close to the furthest edge as well so it made staying on the bird tricky.
However it did stay out in the open for long periods so you should be able to get good views.
The gosh had been seen in this area by a couple of birders who were there when I arrived, apparently I 'd missed the bird by about 10 minutes or so.
I did have crossbill as well whilst walking up through the wooded area before the fenced enclosure.

Travelled down to see the Great Grey Shrike yesterday - and it obliged brilliantly its spent at least half hour in same tree then took off - hovered over the wood, then landed in tree beside the track.
Good to talk to some of the birders down there - I waited a while to see if the goshawks showed but out of luck there- apparently showed while I was watching shrike. Thanks for the excellent direction guys.

birdbrainer

but some people call me Helen!!
at fairburn today

Did my usual Monday volunteering at Fairburn today. The visitor centre looking better every week. The long eared owls are still about - at least one sighting today! The water rail continues to show under the feeder outside the centre. There were a number of buzzards over Newfield Plantation up to 6. A first for me.

Fantastic photo of the shrike - not seen one yet. Its great being at the begining of my twitching "career" because I see something new nearly every week. Feel sorry for all you experienced birders!!!!!!! :-O

Got Goldfinches at my nyger feeder last week, which I got really excited about!

Wykeham area Sunday;

2 Goshawk, GGShrike, 3 Crossbill, 10 Siskin, 5 Redpoll, Woodcock, 1 Dipper, 2 Kingfishers, Grey Wagtail, Buzzard, 2 Barn Owl. A total of (up to) 9 Great Spotted Woodpeckers drumming in numerous locations was a big count.

Had a 'non birding' day in the dales y'day. Redshank, oystercatcher and curlew around Bolton Abbey area, dipper and grey wagtail in grassington and a few buzzards.

Was going to nip over for the mealy redpoll at Linthwaite today. Does anyone know if the private garden is viewable? and if so any directions to the particular garden would be greatley appreciated!

hello can anyone give me any gd places to visit to see bird while im staying... burn hall.....Huby north yorkshire........

A quick check has allowed me to edit this and not look too stupid, it's NOT the Huby thats between Harewood and Harrogate but the one up the A19 a few miles north of York. There's still a possibility of Red Kite about, do you have any specific targets?

Its great you are starting out, but please forget about "twitching". You would be better thinking about becomeing a "birder" first.

Remember- anyone can can twitch but not all twitchers can bird!

Goodluck,
Stu.
