Quote taken from Swillington's website
"In case anyone was wondering about Paul Morris’ question above, this was posted earlier today on Birdguides: Kumlien’s Gull, Swillington Ings juvenile and a juvenile Iceland Gull on the causeway at St. Aidan’s Lake viewed from the river bank near Shan House Bridge."

I could still have been looking at an Iceland rather than the Herring, that photo is a month old.
Not really bothered, it's not a life or death competition and I'm not going to lose sleep over something like this. I do what I do for my own enjoyment and not to outdo or impress other people so the gull is now scratched. :)

Chris,
Why do you think the photo is a month old? Paul posted to say there are pics on the site of the bird, its slightly contradictory in that the birdguides text says juvenile and the pics show a 3rd cal yr bird. Is there some suggestion that this is not the bird reported or that you saw???
I seem to remember it was on the pager as 2nd winter so that would fit with the age of the bird in the pic.

G'day.
I think chris is looking at the wrong photo's, the gull in question is the one's with the caption more gull's . As with birdguides i think they posted the age of the gull incorrectlly.
This gull was dismissed as a herring gull when the photo's were posted on the site, by the more experienced swilly birder's, i have been informed this morning.

There are a couple of photos of the reported Kumlien's Gull on the Swillington Ings website under the caption More Gulls!!!

That's the reason why I was looking at the wrong picture, my post wasn't supposed to come accross as petulant but there's a good month between the picture and last week. With half a dozen of the bird group there I had no reason to doubt their judgement and I did ask if they were sure they had the ID right.
Like I mentioned I've scrapped it and it's no big deal.
Chris.

Chris, wasn't an Iceland present as well? Anyway don't worry too much, I'm sure a few nights on the Astley roost and you'll easily clock an Iceland, which is better than a Kumlein's for listing anyday.

Chris I wasn't thinking your post was petulent, it's important to find out the details surrounding any claim of a rare bird and I wanted to get these clear, if the record were ever submitted the records panel would need all information available and confusion over whether a picture is if the actual bird needed to be cleared up.

And another thing...for those interested in the Hornsea Garganey it only has one wing!!!

Are you saying it has one wing or it's missing primaries on one wing. Which wing is missing? Looks well winged to me but I've never seen it in flight. Maybe Andy's right and it's sustains an injury since Sunday. However despite Geoff message it's confiding nature bothers me.
Finally caught up with Dave Tucker's Waxwing in Cottingham this afternoon. Very mobile but up to 54 have been reported today.

The primaries don't project beyond the tertials on the right wing.

Yes: I agree
There's
1. confiding: ie. swimming up close and feeding on bread in the company of other ducks, which I think does not preclude wild origin -the point I was trying to make, and
2. ridiculously tame: ie waddling about on the grass with the geese and Mallards.
It appears that the Hornsea Garganey does the latter

Apparently when breeding in captivity, Garganey are very shy and desert the nest if they think you know where it is!

Also you can maybe buy him a mate from this site!

Refresh on Redpolls

I see there's 16+ now being reported, presumably from Steve's garden, but with an "unconfirmed" status on Birdguides. I've mixed views on the birds I saw. Unfortunately a separate thread didn't spark much debate - perhaps a sign that people don't want to commit.

Fun with Redpolls
This weblink from a post on Arctic Redpoll on another Forum thread is an enjoyable if x-rated read

http://www.freewebs.com/punkbirder/rolloverview.htm

Received a Birdtrack e-mail about an Arctic Redpoll at Old Moor on 23rd March, and photo posted on the Forum. Anyone know where? (apparently members think is a Lesser).
