Wheldrake Ings

For anyone heading to Wheldrake from York, the road beyond the village is closed so you are diverted down to Escrick then back up by Thorganby - adds 15-20mins on your journey.

Dipped on the Garganey today :C

I witnessed two mute swans knocking seven bells out of each other which was pretty spectacular - I was within a few feet of them and they were oblivious of me. vicious stuff! :eek!:

Report of a "stork" on rooftops early doors this morning in Wetherby from a non-birding friend of mine.

Probably be a Grey Heron taking advantage of a garden pond - I've seen GH on nearby rooftops before.

Still it may be as there is suitable stork habitat about. If it is one, it'll probably be a Harewood bird in any event. I remember one starting to nest build in Boston Spa a couple of years back. One frequented a school roof in Wetherby a few years back as well, but prob. still GH.

Frustratingly, I saw about half a dozen large gulls this morning (one looked huge) on the school field as I cycled to work. All appeared to be very white with no discernible grey or black. Couldn't stop or get closer to be sure and no bins meant that white winged gulls are still evading me (apart from Med) grrrr.

Went for the smew and grebe today, thanks for the info Phil, Jim and Marcus. Sadly no joy with the smew but the grebe was a cracker.
Phil it turns out I was talking to you and a couple of other chaps on site this morning at around 10.15, but I didn't realise it was you until Den told me after you'd left. Next time I'll introduce myself properly.
Off to Adel Dam now to do a bit for the BTO Atlas.

Back from Adel Dams and got to report that there is a fair bit of work going on to make the path to the reserve entrance wheelchair friendly. This involves an awful lot of running back and forth with a small dump truck. There's also work ongoing to make the path from the entrance to the feeder hide wheelchair friendly, and apparently the hide is going to be renewed later this year and the steps replaced with a ramp, thankfully this work is only happening on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Today when I was there the noise was horrendous and as such the species count was low. Main highlight was a bit of great spotted woodpecker porn, a pair indulging in all sorts of hi-jinks.
Thankfully this wasn't a timed visit for the BTO Atlas, just a casual one, be a bit of a let down to have only 108 birds in total on a spring day when I got over 300 birds in February.

Always more to learn
Has anyone trued any of the reptile sites? Anyone fancy meeting up on saturday?

No sign on Monday, despite checking all the sites - but it was very overcast, and quite cool. This cloud rolling in off the sea is a bit of a downer, but should be good if wind goes westerly by Sunday! Had a rollercoastering raptor which was a bonus!

Getting there...
It's only just within Yorkshire by a whisker, but has anyone seen the Great Grey Shrike on the A57 near Strines? Thinking of going up there after work to have a look.
