Swinemoor Common

Update: Golden Plover 1000+ (most in breeding plumage), [at least 50 broke away flying NW at about 3pm], 4 Little Egret, 2 Whooper Swans (one with ring leg numb DJ3), 3+ Ruff, 2 Kingfisher, 2 Curlew, plenty of Snipe, Lapwing, Redshank. Couldn't locate any LRP, but couldn't scan every area when there's 10 people in tow, whose needs have to be taken into account! Horrible cold dank weather, especially this morning. That's me finished until April 21st - any suggestions what to do till then - polite ones only please!

Just got Jackie's pics of Whooper back, and in addition to leg ring one of the Whoopers has a radio antennae sticking out its back. Wonder if we'll be able to find out were it came from?

I can hear the call of Spurn!

Check out the Common Redpoll from Blashford Lakes today on Birdguides Steve Walton - (not an anogram of my name - I'm not trying to sneak another shot on for comment - honestly) - displays the "waistcoat" of Lesser and generally brown mantle, with not a particularly sharp white wing-bar. If that is a Common, then it may further support the birds at Linthwaite - unless this is the Rostrata, but I presume Steve would have said.

I see 10+ were reported again yesterday from Linthwaite, (presumably by the householder). It's really odd, some birders have said they can't see anything other than Lesser in the 'photos.

They could do with nailing before they go.

Someone on the course has done a bit of digging & tracked down the identity of the Whooper at Swinemoor today. What follows are Ken D'arcy's own words: I've found "our" swan DJ3, aka Edmund!! He's part of the WWT swan tracking programme. So the antenna wasn't imagined. You can see him on http://whooper.wwt.org.uk/whooper He's second from left in the gallery. The one tucked under someone's arm. Happy birding and bon voyage to Edmund!

A fluke we saw them really. Didn't see any other birders there at all today & the pair will probably be gone in the morning. There's even a google map with Edmund's position marked!
Cheers

Local patch bike ride this evening produced the 'white nun' Smew & the B N Grebe - (the ones mentioned over the last few days on here). Still a few Goosander and Goldeneyes but no sign of any summer passerines passing through but I dont think I can grumble at those two!!!!

John yer a lucky man...I was there yesterday and drew a blank on the nun. The grebe is a showy thing though. There were martins through yesterday morning...not that I was there early enough to see them

What a start to the day! Had an airport run to Manc early doors, decided to do some birding before work Been meaning to look for Lesser Pecker in some woods near Pudsey for some time and bingo, 2 LSW drumming. Also chiffchaff, Jay, at least 4 GSW and a male Sprawk perching on thin branches, gripping tight then trying to fly off. Presumably getting living twigs which will be more pliable for nest building. Also looks great for kingfisher and less than 5 minutes from work, can see some early starts coming up.

Excellent garden tick. Good luck with the pic. We used to get them flying over all the time in the 80's, as they bred in some birch scrub, but now a very rare sight, and never actually landed in the garden.

Smew and grebe at Pugneys

Anyone know if the Smew and Grebe are still at Pugneys and if so exactly where they are (with directions if possible).

Thanks
