Yorkshire Birding (64 Viewers)

Got the 'Birdwatching in the Yorkshire Dales' book that Graham had at the last meet. Excellent book but for the proof reader obviously not being a birder. Take a look at the bird labelled 'tufted duck' in the photo section....

Other than that it's a great little book and I can forgive the guy giving away 'secrets' ;)

Right at the west end - not the hide- park just as you come off the main road. Walk about 1 mile down along the road and follow the footpath left as it comes off the road. You seem to go past the bay on your left before passing through a field with several bulls in. The bottom left of this field looks over the mere - although it is obscured until you get there.

Not been for some time, has the public foot path been routed to this point now?

Off-topic but I'd say the seal photos on the Hull Valley website definitely show a grey seal and not a common seal - the hulking great roman nose is a giveaway!

On behalf of Hull Valley Wildlife Group. Thank you to tophillbirder for this opportunity to respond to the comments on access to one of the private parts of Hornsea mere. The western end shore of the mere is just that, private. It is 1/4 of a mile from the public footpath. If one isn't sure of a location stay out. Do not give directions to sensitive areas. Do not take parties to areas without public access.

As regards down grading of the Lsr Scaup on Hull Valley website. I saw on it Tuesday and shortly afterwards met the finder. We conferred on what we had seen. He had seen it in flight on Monday and seen the 2-tone wing-bar which I hadn't. We both were concerned about the lack of course vermiculations on the back. We thought this may have been due to fog and distance at the time. However Birdieboy 123's picture also show no obvious vermiculations. Had hoped to have another look but haven't been able to. I'm not saying it isn't one just but currently isn't 100% id'ed to my satisfaction.

James.
How clearly must I put this. Just be told will You. You don't know. You are annoying and irresponsible. A representative of the HVWG will be at Tophill Low 2 pm Sunday 19th April should you want to take this further. This is the close of communications on the matter.
Thanks again to tophillbirder.

What? As in a fight 3:)

I am not sure who you are responding to/for. Are you saying James is annoying or is RL. Who is RL? Why are they thanking Tophill Birder? Do they not call you by a proper name? Or are you paraphrasing?

Anyway, please don't air our disputes on the thread do it by PM or email or whatever.

Lets keep the focus on Wellies and other diversions ;)

All reference to the Lesser Scaup and location now deleted. From reviewing John's photos it looks likely to be a hybrid due to lack of vermiculation.

I'm confused. Is the likely hybrid duck the same bird as the Lesser Scaup or are there two birds at Hornsea? I had heard that the Lesser Scaup was called with some certainty after a full appraisal of the features.
