Why not try Eccup, it's only a couple of miles away. Plenty of wildfowl on the water and the usual tits and finches in the plantation. Also good chance of close views of red kite.
Opus page for the site here

Thanks Marcus, that has ruined plans for my day off tomorrow. Might go to Adel instead but it is always a bit dark there

Got the 'Birdwatching in the Yorkshire Dales' book that Graham had at the last meet. Excellent book but for the proof reader obviously not being a birder. Take a look at the bird labelled 'tufted duck' in the photo section....

Other than that it's a great little book and I can forgive the guy giving away 'secrets' ;)

I've got that book too, nice to know some places and what to expect there. Could have done with that at Bolton Abbey last year and I wouldn't have taken myself on the wrong walk.

Chris.

Took it to work today to have a browse in my dinner break and finished up reading it cover to cover as my morning clinic disappeared.... all but 1 person ringing in to rearrange their appointments.
Shame that he got the wrong name for one of the bones in a birds leg, and also called the ankle the knee!

Apparently it's not certain untill RL is 100% satisfied

Hi: sorry if late to this after the party is over!!! ;);). Too busy researching Redpolls.

Lesser Scaup is a BBRC bird, and they will adjudicate if anyone is confident enough to submit it, hopefully via the HVWG Recorder, Roy Lyon, or myself as County Recorder for East Yorks.

Regarding access to Decoy Bay it is private, as Tophill Birder says, and as a result some years ago I entered into negotiations with the Burton Constable estate regarding a hide there. This was refused but we (HVWG) were allowed to refurbish the old hide on the north side. This is on a lease, with limits on number of cars allowed to park.

We have to respect the landowner's wishes, and although birders have cut down to Decoy since I was a lad, this should not be publicly encouraged as it may jeopardise the hide HVWG maintains.

I think this does raise one or two issues regarding the use of Bird Forum but as we are all friends and trying to help each other, use of PM as Marcus states may be best, and maybe a phone call to check: always willing to help.

... again!

Having a sort out/ catch up session this morning. Fnally got my compilation of GGS recordings together, better sound whilst you're looking at my wing mirror. Fortunately no reflection...
...(I'm a vampire)

Very interesting set of recordings. It was a completely silent bird when I was there on one of the last days it was sighted. I'm sure you're right about the alarm call, which I could have played you on Weds, if we'd thought about it! It sounds a bit like Shreek, and isn't there a theory that's it's their alarm calls, which give the bird their family name?

Lucky man Jim.... I'm desperately trying to get in front with work and stuff.... no free time until the week after next. How early/late do they show, and I take it it's the site I know of?

This weekend I'm helping to host a conference here in Yorkshire, next wed I'm in Edgbaston for another conference, and the weekend after I'm running son one back to Preston for the last bit of his first year at Uni. With luck and a big hammer I can persuade him to go early and I'll be able to get a little time at Leighton Moss.
Oh and at some point I've got to wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows as my machine is playing total silly beggars!

I really need some quality time with some quality birds.

Was lucky enough today to be at work examining a railway bridge structure in Dronfield near Sheffield when a Treecreeper came within 6 feet of me whilst looking in the crevises between the stones for insects, shame i did not have a camara it was so close, the nearest i have ever been to a Treecreeper

Members of this thread are well represented in today's Country Section of the Yorkshire Post:

Pete Mella is featured on page 2 as one of the leading Twitters in the area, in an article explaining how this social network service is helping to spread info about the arrival of the spring migrants on a local level.

Then the Birdwatch column is graced by one of Marcus Conway's gorgeous Black-necked Grebe photographs plus an advert about his workshops.

Finally, Jim's sighting of the Montagu's Harrier is included in the round-up of the highlights seen in the region this week. Unfortunately, he isn't credited, but you can't have everything!

Next week, the world!

Blimey! Thanks for that Michael... I'll have to buy a copy! Cheers!

Got my first pied flycatcher of the year at Glen Howe Park, Sheffield today. :t:

Graham....clear some space in your pm folder.:t:

Done.

Not seen any good birds for too long (except Great Northern Diver and Ring-necked Parakeet over the M25 whilst stationary in traffic!). Do still have a job, though. Not sure that's a good thing.

Might get to Bolton Abbey tomorrow or Monday early.

Bought a copy, nice to get a mention, but...

I didn't "tweet" cuckoo sightings as claimed, but answered a question from the journalist asking if there were any cuckoos were around yet, clearly saying these had been what had been reported in Sheffield, and not implying they were my own sightings (I haven't even had one yet this year).

Somehow this has become me seeing two cuckoos and excitedly tweeting my own news, meaning I've had to email the actual finders explaining the situation, so if they read it they don't think I'm some weirdo who spends my days on Twitter passing other people's sightings off as my own.

Bloody journalists :C

Don't they twist stuff? The write-up in the Guardian of the session I led at North Cave didn't quite fit with the walk as I'd experienced it. I read your Twitter & thought I must have missed your Cuckoo records, but now all is explained! Never mind, it has given your twitter feed some publicity, so you may get some new people interested in what will be genuine records! I heard my first one of the year this morning, when a landowner asked me to lead a birdwatching walk for beginners on his private land in the depths of Holderness - always good to hear genuine Cuckoos!

I hope Marcus is happier with his photo appearing in the paper & his advert, as I was actually involved in ensuring that appeared, whilst I'm completely innocent of the twitter article!
