Because all egyptian geese are plastic-ish but there are a few knocking about so that makes em acceptable. Sadly the R-C Pochard was put there by a bloke. You can have your geese though...

Haha..Thanks James your a star!!! Hope your all enjoying the nice weather I work on a Oil Refinery in Immingham and getting regular views of Peregrine which is always good!!!

Getting there...
My mum's just texted to me to say she's just seen none other than Bill Oddie out twitching at High Bradfield (on Sheffield's NW Moors), and a few birders around. Nowt on BirdGuides, anyone know of anything interesting going off in that area?

I'm still getting daily sightings of the local woodlarks down to about 30/40 ft. Also stonechats singing from the top of a pine tree, may have been after the flies today. Still waiting for the tree pipits and a clear sighting of the cuckoo.

He may have lost the springwatch gig, be interesting to see if it improves the show. At least we won't have to see his s**t garden anymore.

Anyone know whom to contact at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Re: Irresponsible dog owners? Was at a sensitive site today with ground nesting birds & one had 2 large Red Setters romping free in an area walkers aren't allowed never mind dog-walkers. Also present was an elderly gent with his Dalmatian off its lead. It is normally a very quiet reserve, so it seems these people think they can get away with it. There are notices saying "No Dogs", but these are obviously being blatently ignored. I took photos of the offending owners & their dogs, but want to ensure they get to the right people for something to be done.

If it's the site I'm thinking of, I found a family (complete with kids and dogs) having a picnic in the centre of the area two years ago. They couldn't have cared less. You're probably better just letting their car tyres down.

Kestrels?

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed a drop in the number of kestrels seen by the motorway. Just back from a trip to Birmingham, a trip I make annually and today I saw only one kestrel and that was in Warwickshire. Last year I reached double figures seen whilst travelling on the M1 alone.

Jay on ring road at Horsforth!

Driving between Horsforth and Rodley on Leeds ring road and couldn't believe my eyes as this a Jay was pottering about on the grass verge! Just up from where they do the bike scrambling.
This would be unusual would it not?

I've noticed this too when I've had the odd daylist on the go, travelled fairly long stretches of motorway, and not ended up getting one. Seems stranger when you think it was supposed to be a good autumn/winter for voles.

Yesterday walked between Draughton and Ilkley, via Middle Hare Head, Bolton Abbey, and Beamsley Beacon. Good day really, lots of birds about including hundreds of curlew, red grouse, meadow pipits everywhere, stonechat, snipe, common sand on the river, red kites and buzzard. Sadly no ring ousel.

Also saw mandarin duck close to Bolton Abbey, what's the deal with these? Are they 'wild' birds or recently escaped or released?

Also, talking of ferals, the day before yesterday (whilst I was still back in the East Riding) I saw a Reeve's pheasant as I drove through the woods by Welton. I know there's a fairly serious pheasant shoot in them woods, I guess it's may've been released by them. Even so, it's survived this season, maybe they'll breed?

It's illegal to release non-native gamebirds (with the exception of common pheasant and RLP, of course), so that's quite interesting... either someone's breaking the law, or it's been there a while... (seeing as the law came in in 1981, probably the former!)

I guess the third option is it has escaped from somewhere.
