Grief, that's very nearly my patch! Would make a very welcome tick :t:

Any other details?

Can you tick bacon butties? If so we got a mega on Saturday.

Have just returned from a walk around scar house & Angram reservoirs up in the dales. I was walking along with are lass thinking to myself - well its been a nice walk, nice views, nice weather, but weve hardly seen ought when we nearly stood on an Adder sunning itself. We couldnt believe it, I dont know anything about snakes but I was not expecting to see one up there. Does anyone have any info on snakes in the Dales??

As far as the birds went the highlights were - Common sandpipers, curlews and a few Wheatears, no sign of any Ring Ouzels, stone/whinchats, merlin or SE Owls.

Still cant believe we saw an adder - a first for both of us.:t:

John the Ring Ouzel can often be heard from the car park at Scar or Lodge Gill on the far side of the reservoir,SE Owl and Merlin often in the area below Whernside. You were lucky to see Adder as they usually vanish at the sound of a walkers footsteps.

Is it worth the trip? It's in my "Birdwatching walks in the Yorkshire Dales" book and thought about going. There are quite a few to choose from and I've not decided which to do next.

Chris,it's always worth a trip but pick a reasonable day as it is quite exposed up there and birds, like us,seem to keep their heads down in poor weather. The book you mentioned has some great birding walks in it,any of which are worth a look.

Cheers Pete, luckily the storm at Malham Tarn last week waited until I got to the trees and then only lasted an hour or so. My next trip out is in July when I'm next off work so I usually check the Countryfile forecast on the Sunday. Scar House is a good bet because I wouldn't expect it to be overrun by kids on school hols.

Had a cracking day doing the Strid walk at Bolton Abbey yesterday. Went later on in the afternoon so it was less busy at the Barden Bridge end, but it was heaving by the Cavendish Pavilion.

Saw Treecreeper, Nuthatch, Dipper, Coal Tit, Pied and Spotted Flycatchers. No warblers or redstarts.

The Pied Flys were at the end of the walk above the Strid, and I managed this photo as a record shot only. The Spotted Flys are actually nesting on top of the alarm box outside the main entrance to the shop.

I was ready to throw out the camera as all my shots near the "feeding stump" came out blurred & I deleted 90% of them, but the Spotted Fly made me think again.

Getting there...
I'm thinking of having a trip to North Cave for the first time next week, and one bird I want to pick up while I'm there is lesser whitethroat, which has been giving me the slip all summer so far. Is there a particular area of the reserve that's good for them?
