Yorkshire Birding (2 Viewers)

I'm sure I'd heard corn buntings out Church Fenton way about a month ago. Every time I stopped the bike to try and see all I got was a blur of fairly distant motion so never knew if that's what they were. There were reed and yellowhammers around and they were easier to see however.

Hi Chris

That sounds really likely, when i used to live at Monk Fryston i used to see them around all the villages in that area, e.g. Barkston Ash, Saxton, Sherburn in Elmet etc...

Have been seeing them around York quite regularly too, eg Green & Kirk Hammerton, Poppleton, Knapton... etc...

Cheers, Andy

Always more to learn
Mick & Kath Sharpe of West Yorkshire were lucky enough to get some great pics of a Hobby at Spurn recently. The files are too big for me to attach here, but I've put 5 of them on my blog - just wish I'd been lucky enough to take them! Enjoy!

Mmmm Sprun.... that's a new site for me Mike, got directions?;)

They are cracking pictures, and the dragonfly makes the dark picture great. Lucky people to get that opportunity.

Potentially embarrassed !!

Could I get some opinions on this bird.Yes I know I should put it on ID forum but it will be bad enough the whole of Yorkshire laughing at me,never mind the world,if it turns out to be a starling !.Seen tonight in poor light.Flew from l;akeside willow onto snag in lake on island. No call. All dark in flight. In the field it was odd,not right for blackbird or starling but the bill was most striking feature. What is it??

Well ,if I dont ask...

Cheers

Paul

Tricky one. Frightening but with several comfirmed and uncomfirmed claims earlier this year Brown-headed Cowbird comes to mind. Must be getting late. Time to go to bed!

Wouldn't have minded such good views of the hobby as on your blog Michael. I had much more of a distant look last Saturday but still seeing two buzzards and a hobby mobbing a red kite while a kestrel hunted below was quite a sight. Pity the marsh harrier had gone to ground a few minutes earlier. That would have been a good view.

Spotted Flycatchers at Burton Agnes Hall

I called in briefly (10 min) to the main visitor entrance at Burton Agnes Hall near Bridlington this evening - a quick check to try to find out whether the Spot Fly pair which bred here last year are back again. Unfortunately, no sign.
Does anyone know whether Spot Flys are at Burton Agnes at all this year?

It's a Jackdaw. Primary projection is far too long for a Cowbird

G

Have to put a smiley or something in future to let the slow to catch on know when my postings are meant to be light hearted. At this more human hour it does look good for a juv Jackdaw but after the Rodley NR Common Tern photo I think we should all be more cautious about ID-ing from sub Marcus standard pictures.
Have seen Brown-headed Cowbird and the bill is wrong anyway. Unfortunately some people on another thread have taken my suggestion and run with it. SORRY!!

It is a Jackdaw ! Went back today and found it .I DIDn't put it on as a joke...I was genuinely confused by its apparent small size and appearance.I live...and sometimes learn.

I guess you're another victim of the "Birding Mafia". Unfortunately we can't all be experts but that doesn't stop us being ripped to pieces for not being able to identify every little feather on a bird's wing. Luckily the vast majority of people on this thread aren't like that but there is the odd highjacker.

Corn bunting would be a good bird for me, not seen one for several years. I keep turning up at places where they used to be.... not where they are.:C

The best area close to you is out around Lotherton Hall and beyond, towards Sherburn-in-Elmet and Barkston Ash. I had at least four singing birds along Cold Hill Lane last weekend. This is my last 'banker' site in the Leeds area.

Old Moor

Hi all

Apologies if this has been mentioned recently but just not had the time to come on the computer for long. Anyway - did I hear right that some Barn Owls had nested and were being seen on an afternoon at Old Moor?? If so and its delicate info please PM me - its been a few years since I saw one and I was thinking of calling in at the weekend for an hour so any info on where and when is best would be appreciated. Much else at Old Moor??

Cheers

John
