Red Kite in Leeds Museum

There's no t'interweb link for it that I can find ... today's Evening Post had a small article about a red kite going on display in the new Leeds Museum. It's a bird that was found hurt at Whixley last year, had to be put down due to the nature of it's injuries, it's been preserved and will feature in the Life on Earth gallery in full flight pose.

just back from the Jackson family vacation in north west France - the emphasis was on bucket and spading with the oldest daughter, plus a good bit of surfing ........ but a few good birds were seen as well.

habitat was a rocky peninsula in the extreme west with low lying marshy/scrub inland:
birds included -
pair of chough
daily sighting female marsh harrier
large colony of sand martins in the sand dunes/cliffs - brilliant photo opportunity for the skilled.
corn buntings+++
little egrets+
and the highlight ....... 3 bee-eaters sat on the wires on the drive home from the surf - present 6 days out of twelve and only present late evening. fab.

Quick visit to Blacktoft this evening hoping for some photo opportunities - I hadn't really appreciated how distant stuff is there, hence loads of poor 'photos. It seems quite grown up in front of the hides at the moment - no chance for the really close up Green Sands that used to be on offer.

A reasonable selection of waders but generally quiet - Ruff, Green Sand, Spotshank, Greenshank, Redshank, Avocet, Dunlin, Black-tailed Godwit.

2-3 Marsh Harriers, Bearded Tit, Yellow Wag, Whitethroat. Also Small Tortoishell and Meadow Brown.

Hedgepig in the garden this evening - haven't seen one for ages.

Spurn Saturday

Highlights from 0930 to 1600 today at Spurn:

Arctic Tern: One very interesting first-summer type bird at High Tide, Chalk Bank
Little Tern: 55 also at High Tide, Chalk Bank
Brent Goose: One pale-bellied individual, Chalk Bank
Whimbrel: At least one, Chalk Bank
Wheatear: Two juvenile plumage birds level with posts 42 and 43 on the Humber shore
Whitethroat: Good number of territories over the peninsular
I managed to dip a Crossbill in the Sandy Beaches / Beacon Lane area
Butterflies included Comma, Red Admiral and Ringlet. Many Brown-Tailed Moths (unfortunately...) plus several (Six Spot?) Burnet Moths

I've signed up too, didn't realise spain did this!

I am ashamed to say this onerous practice is thankfully restricted to the mountains areas of Northern Valencia province. I have never witnessed it in Spain first-hand but know people who have and have been threatened when confronting the perpetrator, much like it is in Cyprus or Malta!.

The Communitat Valenciana Authorities seem to dragging their feet in iradicating this, but you only have witness their piss-poor management of smoking in (alleged) non-smoking restaurants to understand why. It is such a shame as this province has so much to offer as regards wildlife and wilderness areas but fails to see the benefit in there promotion.

Hopefully petitions like these will help speed up the process and get this liming finished once and for all.

Thanks to everyone who has signed.

Spurn

Family day out at Spurn today and no chance for any proper birding. Med Gull (Gate) and Curlew Sand (Chalk Bank and later, Narrows) were seen by other birders in the early afternoon.
