Always more to learn
There were only a couple of Puffins left for my first visit to Bempton, hiding away in the cliffs, Guillemots & Razors gone, but indeed plenty of Kittis & Gannets to occupy me.
Only had time for a brief reccy of North Landing, more Puffins there.

Thanks for putting me onto the landing, I'll have to plan a trip there next year, earlier in the season. :smoke:A longer day would be required if not a couple. It looks very promising.

Yeah, North Landing is quite a well kept secret in comparison to Bempton. If you keep going south there's now a hide looking over a marsh, which should also hold interesting migrants at the right time of the year! Glad your visit was well worthwhile.

My new 2010 calendar would act as the perfect reminder for the Puffins next year (as well as lots of other species)! ;)

Filey Brigg

I am thinking about going to Filey Brigg this August hopefully to see some roseate terns (and anything else remotely interesting).
I have heard that the terns roost on an evening- does this have to co-incide with high tide?
or do they congregate to roost no matter what state of tide?
Any info would be appreciated.

Is it possible to get to Potteric on public transport?

You would do well to check the reports on their site prior to making the trip out to Potteric, I went today and it was dull to say the least. Obviously the rain wasn,t helping but I went in every hide and saw hardly anything of any real interest. Other than the usual gulls, coots, ducks and geese there was very little to see which could be classed as out of the ordinary. A few nice views of a kingfisher and a single common sandpiper were all I had to show for a 50 mile round trip.

Shame as Potteric is usually well worth the trip too ...

The advantage of high tide is that the terns and waders have no where else locally to roost if the tide is a big one. I believe they often roost up over high tide regardless of the time of day anyway. My Yorks tick was on Beacon Pond over high tide mid afternoon I think.

A couple of years back there was about 20 Roseate on the Brigg for a couple of days. Can't remember when it was but they are easily identified with all the bling on their legs.

That's late July for you I'm afraid... things will start to get better soon!

I still have lots to learn about the good and not so good times when it comes to birding !!

I was considering a trip out to Blacktoft Sands too in a couple of weeks but I,d hate to do a 110 miler for the same result !!

Looks like being back to Old Moor for me as its much closer.....

Black-tailed Godwit numbers building up as usual at Paull Holme Strays. I visited the Western end only today which contained 469 birds. Surely the best Yorkshire site for such spectacular numbers of this species.

Dave,
when visiting Blacktoft Sands you need to be getting there on a high tide to get the best from the reserve. A falling tide or even worse low tide will mean that the bulk of the waders are out on the Humber mud, not on the lagoons at the reserve. If you haven't a tide table HERE is a link to a free one.
During the winter months the reserve can freeze quite quickly as the area is a frost pocket, so watch the weather forecast before hand, I've made the mistake a couple of times and arrived to see loads of ice and no bloody birds.

It's also about knowing where to go at different times of the year, July is quiet but a visit to Blacktoft mid August has great potential. Many waders will be returning from the arctic circle and you stand a good chance of seeing these birds in breeding plumage as well as the locals.

The RSPB hold wader walks which are well worth the money, only one this year though

Likely waders will be building up soon. Check the info services or ask on here just before your next trip.
Had a quick look at Swinemoor this morning. Nothing doing put it's getting wet and can only get better if the forecast of a wet August is true?!
Plenty of Little Gulls, Common Terns and Common Sandpipers at Hornsea Mere today.

Thanks for the info guys .. This place is, as usual, a 'mine' of information and as a beginner I still have rather a large shovel !!!

Report of an escaped fem Goshawk N.of Beverley since about March and still seen regularly. Worryingly the guy who reported it [not the owner] seemed to infer that it might be of questionable origin.

Blacktoft won't be such a bad trip, as it gets a good smattering of waders at this time of year, so you should get good chance greenshank, spotted redshank, green sand, ruff, avocet, little egret and a few other bits and bobs, as well as bearded tit, marsh harrier, barn owl and a chance of hobby. Much more than Old Moor or Potteric at the moment.

Saying that a whiskered tern was at Ogston Res in Derbys today, so there can be good stuff around even for we landlocked types if you're lucky ;)

Does anyone know about a report of the Lesser Legs at Paull yesterday (Thurs)? Apparently bird was reported at around midday. I was there twice yesterday (at 1600 and 2000) and no sign.

It wasn't me :)

I saw that the high tide times were around midday and was planning a trip down this lunchtime, would appreciate any info on yesterday's sighting

Thanks

Mal Skelton
