Just as a follow up to the Spotted Crake question does anyone have any up to date news on it as myself and Pete Mella might be off to try and get it tomorrow.
Still 8pm again from the bench.
We have 60-70 Greylags on the mere at Nafferton at the moment whereas normally that would be about 10-15 birds. No gypo geese though.
Even less Greylags at High Eske NR this evening. Wouldn't be surprised if it turns up at Tophill Low NR.
Despite my last posting had a Wood Sandpiper on Swinemoor this evening on virtually the last bit of water.
2 Ospreys lingering at Hornsea Mere today. Hopefully linger into tomorrow afternoon. Might have been there this evening if it hadn't taken all evening to get thro' Beverley. Roadworks on the southside then the Tribfest at Tickton causing major tailbacks. Best avoid if you can. Judging from what I heard this evening this includes Tribfest as well. Someone murdering Greenday.

Still need osprey for my Yorks list worryingly. Would have gone had I not been at work. Tophill Low Ringing Group kickoff tomorrow. Homepage is http://tophillringing.blogspot.com - not a lot on there at the moment but hope to put up catch details, inhand shots and some shots of the site. Also hoping to get the other members of the group to contribute.

Supa Silly Un
Crake

I watched it tonight at 20.00. It is always distant and gives fleeting glimpes. From the bench look left to end of furthest channel of water. The second was apparently nearer but only been seen once. Unless you are desperate or year listing I'd wait for the next one. Very dark individual - not strongly spotted but it was dark and distant.
Sanderling on spit.

No doubt most people in the area will be aware that the Hull Valley Wildlife Group website is temporarily offline, due to server problems. Hopefully it will be up and running again soon. Please continue to send in records to Derrick Venus: [email protected] Thanks.

Steve(Lawts), thanks for the tip off.Always worth knowing the chance of seeing a bird. Just got back from the hospital - some sort of allergic rash!! - so 3 hour round trip for a distant view is a no no. But thanks so much for the info.

Had a ride up to Hetchell Wood this afternoon, not a bad little spot shame some numpties have to leave their litter there. Didn't see too much other than a few tits and three buzzards but did hear bullfinch, green woodpecker and I'm sure I heard the "pitchoo" of a marsh tit. Plenty of butterflies, grasshoppers and a couple of big dragonflies.

Getting there...
Good day at Old Moor and Edderthorpe in the company of Dave (Simmo) today, dipped the spotted crake but plenty of other stuff, including 18ish black-tailed godwit, a sanderling, 2 yellow wags, at least 7 greenshank, 7+ green sand, a couple of common sand, a little egret, 3 snipe and 7 or 8 golden plovers back among the lapwings.

Called in for the spotted crake and saw it for about 10 seconds at around 12 noon - a lifer for me. (Pete - no intention to rub it in fella, Ive dipped more than most). Spent another hour there trying to be greedy for a second look but to no avail. My stomach wanted food and I had to get back, but called in for I think my quickest ever visit to Old Moor - I had promised her indoors fish & chips - but managed to see Greenshank, Green Sandpipers, Black Tailed Godwit and some Golden Plovers.

Whilst at old moor I saw a butterfly which was new to me - Ive only just started taking any real notice of them, it was brown with a number of what looked like yellow dots (eyes), closer to the size of a peacock than say a common blue. Anybody any ideas???

Pat Haven

I've been down to Pat Haven a couple of times just recently, first Friday night for a recce and then again this morning.
Last night there was a few decent birds about including distant marsh harrier, kingfisher, whinchat, willow warbler, yellow wagtail, golden plover to about 10m (didn't take my camera) plus common waders and hirundines.
I went again today to try a different spot than my usual, I figured that with it being one of the biggest tides of the year the lagoon would be full before the sun got up, so I went on the very end spit past the pumping station.
Was only there 5 min when a raptor shot 3 ft above my head doing 100mph.
It circled round and landed about 25m in front of me and stayed for about 5 min.
I was quite pleased with the shot bearing in mind the sun wasn't up so the light wasn't helping.(ISO 200 and 1/12)
Also yellow wagtail to 2ft!
The river was like a boiling couldron and this seemed to send the birds into a frenzy with waders and gulls shooting past all the time looking for somewhere to land.
This morning was a magnificent spectacle-truly memorable but over all too quickly I was back at the car for 7.00am.

Yes Pete,

A good day, pity about the spotted crake but I guess we cant win them all, I might have an hour tomorrow and see if I can fare any better. Nice to catch up with Phill Wain (666taz) pointing his equipment at an unsuspecting Greenshank ... Hope you had a good day Phill.

Another pic for birdguides, I'm no expert but it looks very good to me.

Despite my initial weariness this morning I took the dogs for their walk an hour later than usual but was rewarded with 5 red kites and a buzzard giving a good display. Probably attracted by a farmer ploughing a field near Garforth Golf Course. After watching for about 15 mins I turned to check out two small birds to find spotted flycatchers, more satisfying than the raptors as I've not seen one for over a year.

Just checking the forecasts hoping for the right weather sometime over the next week and a half, just peeking into next Sunday is a northerly blast, fingers crossed the forecast firms up and it's the coast next Monday.

Hope your magic seaweed proves more prophetic than last time!!! :t:

I've got Migrant Specials lined up at Spurn on the Tues & Weds of that week, what's the odds for Wynecks & Red-backed Shrikes, or something mind-boggling as per your scientific method? :eek!:
