Have a couple of days off next week whilst the kids are still on school holidays, and my two have roped me into going to The Deep. Thought I might have a couple of hours at Blacktoft with them on the way home. Is it worth it at this time of year??

Cheers,

Richard

Worth it, if you like Marsh Harriers, Bearded Tits & plenty of waders at high tide times. Also, a good scattering of common migrants on passage. For a report within the last fortnight see Martin Standley's blog:

Also report from 20th August from Rentoncharman on this thread with excellent photos: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=61534&page=345

Quite a heavily bird-themed Yorkshire Post today. Big magazine feature on Spurn, and especially a certain Andrew Gibson!

In the Country Section there's a 2 page feature on the bird man of Catterick Garrison & his ringing group. Interesting facts revealed about their ringing of Kingfishers, Willow & Garden Warblers, more info at: www.foxglovecovert.org.uk & finally this thread's Vince Cowell's Cuckoo pic is also featured in the country section

Whinchat at Cherry Cobb Sands today - sounds like a 'nice' place, but not much to speak of really! There are no Cherries & the Sands are just mud!

Just got back from Troutsdale (Hilla Green). Plenty of Kingfishers zooming up and down the river, together with Dipper and Grey Wagtail. A huge Brown Rat swam across giving me a small heart attack as I was keeping an eye out for Mink and an even rarer aquatic mammal!

As the light went good numbers of Daubenton's (and possibly Natterer's) Bats hunted insects around the bridge.

A Barn Owl near Snainton ended the evening nicely.

edit: almost forgot - yesterday's Badger watching was a success with two boars and two sows seen well.

Mike,
I'm a complete virgin where live badgers are concerned, I'd gladly drive over your way next time a badger watch is planned...love to see even 1 animal however fleeting.

Foxglove covert is my local patch the article can be found online here Another article that was in the telegraphs life magazine can be found here

They have a good blog too, normally updated daily, http://foxglovecovert.blogspot.com/ for a small reserve of 96 acres it has a massive amount of species, a new wet meadow was built during the winter months and is doing very well, awaiting to see what fly's in over winter this year.

I don't normally do this but I entered a photographic competition, and am in the running to win, if you would like to vote for my butterfly picture I would be grateful http://cde.cerosmedia.com/Portrait-Masterclass-Nikon-D3000-Review/1L4a7aa6af96aec012.cde/page/12 Printers like this are out of my reach price wise, if anyone wants a chance at wining one the next months competition is "animal portraits" its free to enter and there are many good photo's on this forum that could win.

Cheers

The following are details of a pelagic out of South Shields which I hope some of you will be able to attend

The sailing is booked for Sun 6th Sept leaving from Mill Dam, South Shields. Sailing will be 8am-4pm up to 12 miles offshore.

The trip will be weather dependent and will be cancelled if poor weather, but may be able to be rearranged.

Price is £27.50 per person. Please send full amount to me to reserve place. First 11 payments received will get places (can't think of a better way to do it than that?). If only paying for one trip, please let me know which trip you want to go on. Could arrange more trips if high demand.

Easiest way to pay is to send money to my paypal account. Send to email address [email protected] Otherwise send cheque to 23 Rede Avenue, Hebburn, Tyne and Wear, NE31 1QT.

Trips open to all including non-DBC members.

To book or if any questions get in touch.

Id love to make that trip but too far away from home with baby on the way. Can just about get away with the Yorkshire Belle a week later.

Managed to find a female flava wagtail at Barmston on a walk with my wife this afternoon plus a couple of juvenile Dunlin at Kirkholme point, Hornsea. Offshore at Barmston only a few Sandwich Terns. I forgot my camera which is frustrating as the wagtail was point blank.

Now that's a bitch, I'd love to go Ross but won't be in the UK on that day. I'm sure some of the other Tykes will grab a ticket though

Anywhere nice Keith?

That does look interesting but did the Brid pelagic on Saturday. Went on spec after the forecast showed a northerly blast on Friday night. Better trip than last year but fell well short of 2 years ago. The organisers were surprised with what we did see (they expected very little). Quite a few Manx, mostly distant but a few at closer quarters, a couple of Arctic Skua and a bonxie. Quite a few passerines making their way to Flamborough. Corys was seen at Long Nab so trip could have been very worthwhile.

Went to Flamborough before and after, lots of lovely bright willow warblers, a few spotted flycatchers, whitethroat and wheatear so a bit of movement.

Next weekend is potentially excellent, the storm passing through Wednesday/Thursday means there are Force 9 north westerlies blowing down into the north sea from Friday afternoon until saturday morning when it calms to Force 4.

I'm really tempted by this South Shields gig, I would be very interested in this trip next year as I would love to go a long way out on a longer trip but I just need a bit more notice (unlikelysaturday but open to persuasion though ;)) .

Yes Pete,

A good day, pity about the spotted crake but I guess we cant win them all, I might have an hour tomorrow and see if I can fare any better. Nice to catch up with Phill Wain (666taz) pointing his equipment at an unsuspecting Greenshank ... Hope you had a good day Phill.
