Managed another nice 'Yorkshire tick' today as I was fortunate enough to see the Marsh Warbler at Edderthorpe Flash. Not brilliant views as you might expect but good enough to watch it singing. I left at 6:00pm but the bird had been quiet for a fair while. A guy who I was standing with thought that he had seen it fly across to the far bank of the river but couldn't be sure.

Hopefully it is still about but no reports since I left.

Nightingales at Thorne

In an attempt to plug one of the embarrassing gaps in my Yorkshire list I am hoping to pay a visit to Thorne for Nightingales. Any tips would be gratefully received though PM or email would probably be best.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Dave
Is there access to the riverbank where the Marsh Warbler is singing?
(as i think with other birds at this site it usually says view only from layby)
Is Access from the main layby?
Had a look on google earth and it looks as if there is a path off to the right from the layby and then following left behind the flash to get to the river, is that correct?

Cheers Gary

Timble

Went with the missus to timble last night. Spectacular views of a SEO quartering with the LEO joining in a bit later. Other highlights included 2 cuckoos chasing each other and a phone wire hunting Little Owl. Also heard Tawny calling. Tried for a Barn Owl on the way home but didn't quite manage a 5 owl night.

Hia Mark, just read your post about the Owls....but where is Timble..? Is it a code name for another site..? Could you please enlighten me Mark, it sounds excellent. Regards Joe

Hi Joe

The car park is accessed from a track leading directly off the A614.

Head south through Hatfield Woodhouse and then c.1km past the prison turn left off the A614 onto a track (it is brown-signed). Follow this track for 800m and it leads directly to the 'Boston Park' car-park. This car park is in the extreme south-west corner of the Moors and several way-marked trails lead from it.

The car-park is shut prior to dusk (on site signs will advise of time) but there is plenty of space to park up in front of the gates.

A blog site administered by local birders advises of the latest sightings for what is becoming one of the very best inland locations.

Please see http://hmbb1.wordpress.com/

Hope you enjoy your visit.

I didn't realise it at the time but heard a quail this morning. It didn't sound too far away either, if I'd known what it was I would have tried harder to see it. A long shot I know.

Yes Gary, you can reach the river by dropping straight down the banking, heading right from the laybye and following the path until you reach the old tyres which some kind soul has dumped. At this point head slightly left up a banking and you will see a stream in front of you. Head right along the stream and you will reach a point where you can cross (a steep path drops to the left and a large pipe is buried there where the stream comes out). Cross here and then head back to the left. Just before you reach the wooden gate you can head off to the right and follow the path along the fenceline of the main body of water. Turn left at the end and you are now heading towards the river. As you near the river you can head right and the bird was seen about 150 yards or so along there.

On a separate post, someone has just reported a Purple Heron flying over the theatre of chips in Scarborough this evening at 20.00.

You need to start bringing that caravan to Spurn Mark!
I've found my own the last two springs.

Pete.

Out BTO Atlas surveying yesterday, found a mistle thrush that was doing a spot on impersonation of a Cetti's warbler! Totally threw me for a few minutes until I found the culprit and calmed down.
Also had common tern so close I could have grabbed it, along with a reeling gropper and more whitethroats than you could shake a stick at.
Was talking to a chap who reckoned there was a quail calling on site, I didn't hear it but I couldn't hang around to wait as time was tight. No reason to doubt his id as he was spot on with garden wearbler and the gropper.

Went to Wyming Brook today and got a tick in the form of Wood Warbler. Heard 2 calling from same area. One stayed in the canopy out of view but the other was surprisingly showy singing whilst perched in the open. A very rewarding tick after 4 failed attempts this summer! Finished the day with a trip for the Edderthorpe Marsh Warbler. After 2 1/2 hours of staring at a lifeless bush, it eventually showed. Sat on top of the bush and gave excellent views singing for a good 5minutes before disappearing into a nearby willow. A very satisfying day's birding.

P.s. Cheers for the directions you posted Simmo, spot on!

Directions to Hatfield Moor

Hia Tracy......can you give me some directions to get and park up at Hatfield Moor. Regards Joe

Hi Joe- Hatfield moor is located approx 6 miles East of Doncaster. From Doncaster follow signs for the A18 (signposted Scunthorpe) keep on this road driving through Edenthorpe, Dunsville and Hatfield then turn right just before the Green Tree pub onto the A614 signposted Hatfield Woodhouse. Drive through Hatfield Woodhouse and follow the road for approx 3 miles heading towards Blaxton. The car park is on the left hand side past HM Prison Lindholme and the water park. If you come by motorway exit J5 of the M18 and take the M180 to exit at Junction 1, take the A18 back towards Hatfield woodhouse and turn right onto the A614. I hope this makes sense! Ive had a look on English Natures webite and cant find any directions. You can pick it up on google maps if you type in Hatfield Moors. Cheers Tracy
