There is a grapevine at Filey but Jack's Cafe acts like the hub. Once the info hits there it very quickly gets out everywhere including the CBs and, if relevant, the birdlines etc. There is also a log in there where we record sightings - you can read this any time and there is a chalk board with the latest sightings on it. You'll also regularly find birders in there having a drink etc so you can exchange info also. Unfortunately the cafe closes between Nov and late March. During the winter months we meet down at Baker's Cafe at Coble Landing on the seafront.

Hope that helps.

A bit of a long shot I know but I was hoping that the Slavonian grebe may still be at the Lakeside shopping centre near Potteric Carr, if anyone could tell us one way or the other I would be most grateful.

Cheers

Tim.

Not had anything through on the pager today Tim but thats all I can offer mate.

Inalnd waders??

Saw a large-ish flock of 30-40 small waders flying amongst the Lapwings at the traffic light crossroads near Leeds/Bradford Airport on the way home from work. They landed in the fields but I was driving so couldn't see what they were for definite.

Possible thoughts were Knot or Dunlin but so far inland?? Certainly weren't Lapwings that I normally see in that field.

Always more to learn
Not exactly twitchable now but I picked up a roadkill Eagle Owl this afternoon from the
A63 outside Hessle! No rings or jesses.

I think I saw that & couldn't quite believe my eyes! I thought at 70 mph that's no pheasant, but didn't have time to go back & check! But then I thought nah, it can't be - i must be imagining it! One was reported in the Hessle area around Christmas last year. It allowed householder to approach closely. ...interesting!

First post so don't mock!Went down to Spurn today and didn't know which way to look!As an inland Tyke,I'm used to the Kites ,and the other stuff we get, but it's the first time I've seen a FLOCK of blackbirds, or watched fieldfares without glasses.I wouldn't know a rarity if it landed on my head: Brent geese, brambling,my poor old Collins guide got hammered. When you spend most your day cooped up in a factory, a little bit of nature blows the cobwebs out!But I'm waiting for our short but Hitchcock like visit from the Pied Wagtails at work.

Don't know why but I was pretty certain what I had just seen and fortunately the traffic was light at that time so I was able to park up safely and walk back. The traffic soon picked up and a I realised it was a bit reckless but I just had to confirm what I thought it was.

Arrangements have been made for the bird to be collected for the appropriate tests etc. to be conducted.

This is what its all about, pure enjoyment and quite a bit of frustration, always plenty to learn no matter how long you have been at the game.

Saw my first fieldfares and brambling of the season this morning, fitting with the chill and frost. Also both green and great spotted woodpecker on the same tree branch which gave a good comparison for size.
Coming home from the gym I had five red kites over the house for a few minutes, one of which flew very low before they all drifted away. Four South and one West.
