Managed to catch up with the Cetti's on Old Moor this morning after a dawn start .. Also had 11 waxwings over plus 2 rock pipits too ..

Watching the sunrise made the early start worthwhile on its' own !!

gonna be based in whitby at weekend. is there a spot near there i can get rough legged buzzard? I will be using mostly yhte bus and some feet action to get it. AM guessing most of the sites would be nowhere near transport?

I know the whitby to scarborough bus is REALLY slow. is it worth going to filey to see if anything is about?

advice appreciated )

Had a wander round the village today with my daughter. A Water Vole was seen on the village stream - a normal enough sight for round here. Later on I had a Siskin in the lone Alder by the mere. All of a sudden there were loads overhead in the air. Fingers crossed for garden this weekend.

Was across this weekend but didn't encounter any Siskins. Not many thrushes for the time of year either, they must have moved straight through...

Not a lot else, though a Water Rail was some consolation. Brrrr!

Rock Pipit seems like a good record. Is that unusual for an inland site?

At this time of the year we get quite a few 'flyovers' reported .. Apparently there are some birds which in the Winter will move further inland and take up residence on reservoirs.

Our reports are usually 'flyovers' though ...

Just got the new Yorkshire Wildlife calendar courtesy of Michael Flowers. Nice calendar, informative and some cracking photos. Beats my current RSPB one hands down. Plus it contributes to the Spurn Observatory.
Cheers Michael.

had 50+ waxwings in halifax about an hour ago around the bottom of Gibbet St, though very flighty crossing the dual carriageway to Hall St

Went to halifax this morning and saw about 20 behind the fire station/tesco. They seem to be very mobile and flighty because they're feeding on flies at the moment rather than berries. Also going round in a number of small groups rather than one larger flock.

Went on to twitch Grahams LSW or at least sit and wait for it to show. I was photographing some nuthatches when I got a call saying I had to give the lads a lift as Lucy was still waiting for the gas engineer to turn up. Picked my way through the nightmare of roadworks in Leeds and five minutes from home got the call saying he'd been whilst I was in transit - aargh!

Went up to 27, good up there at the moment, a tit flock had two goldcrest and a willow tit, a green woodpecker still up there, redwings, bullfinches usual stuff. No waxwings there (yet).

Cheers for the welcomes and suggestions guys.

Cycled down to Wheldrake today and met the Biking Birder (Gary Prescott) pretty cool cause he also comes from Upton Warren like me! Also got to see the American Wigeon and loads of other sweet birds, Wheldrake seems like a good place.

Not strictly Yorkshire but worth a trip over the bridge to Worlaby Carrs in North Lincs. I got there a bit too late for the Hen Harriers - was working in South Lincs (i believe 3 came in to roost), however I was in time for an incredible display of 10 Short-eared Owl and 4 Barn Owl. Plenty of Kestrel and Buzzard, however didn't see the 2 Merlin reported on Birdguides (maybe again before I got there) but I did get a flyover of waxwing (11 birds) - Details on blog

Cheers, Andy
