Always more to learn
Caught up with the waxwings at Cemetery Avenue in Sheffield this lunchtime - am I the last person in Yorkshire to see one this year?! ;)

Does one in February count, or do you mean this season? Nearly everyone seems to mean this autumn when they say this year! I know several people in Yorkshire who have never seen one at all, and there doesn't appear to be any reliable sites in Hull at the moment to rectify that!

There has to be at least one birding disadvantage to living out east ;)

Shameless bit of twitching by Ken (NorthernLoon) and I this aftie to the dark side of the hills - cracking Pied Billed Grebe as a reward however, very showy. Best other bird was a .................. magpie!

Awesome! It looks like a smart bird from the one picture I've seen. I'm off for first light tomorrow for it so I hope it's still there!

Good luck Andy. You should have no problem. As Rob said it was very showy, in fact it was the only bird in view. Shame it was only a year tick ;)

I'm happy with the Skelton Lake bird from the 90's... at least that's on my Yorkshire list. Not so bothered about a year tick especially from the Dark Side...;)

One of my first twitches was Pied Billed Grebe.

Also got Little Bittern on the same day along with over 110 species, it was a great birding day. Other birds we had Golden Eagle, Hawfinch, Bearded Tit, Lesser Pecker, Ring Ouzel, Black Grouse, Wood Warbler, Roseate Tern.

Fond memories.

I've had mixed fortunes with Pied-billed. I went for the long-staying Kenfig bird that had been present for months on end and missed it by a day. It re-appeared the year after, and I was able to connect.

For my second bird, I went over to Pine lake or Dockacres, (somewhere in Lancs) and the same bird followed me back to Yorkshire to Skelton, where I saw it on several dates.

Need a 'photo though so will pay a visit if this sticks.

Begs the question; where did it go? Hardly counts as a twitch when I visited some friends in Newport and toddled over in November. I remember going to Magor where there had been an American Bittern earlier (wish I could have afforded the trip to Cornwall, 2 ticks a-begging- ho hum)

good luck Andy - the rumour was that it had been there since Sunday at least so I reckon you'll be fine - well worth the trip. Keep going past the main yacht club car park (on the right); take the next right and look for a car park down to the left 300yds on - then walk half mile in same direction by the lakeside.
