Barn Owls

The plight of our Barn Owls is to be featured on Look North tonight. Nearly all of Tophill Low's are dead & Bearded Tits are dropping like flies at Blacktoft Sands. Richard Hampshire from Tophill & the warden at Blacktoft will be featured!

Coincidentally, I've just got back from Robert Fuller's & he's lost at least 20 Barn Owls on the wolds. In one box 2 were found dead - the male even had its wing draped round his dead mate! This is on top of the 23 at the Derwent Valley & the 4 I knew about round Sunk Island.

That means at least 50 Barn Owls have died in East Yorkshire in the recent bad weather!

Those with Sky can watch our region's Look North on a different channel, but don't ask me where it is!

I would just like to apologise for Peter Levy, if you don't normally see him on your editions of Look North!

I had a very quick trip around the Driffield area this afternoon. The Waxwings were showing very well around Bracken road often favouring a street lamp.

A rainy Tophill Low produced several Bramblings at the feeders and my first Roe Deer of the year in D’ woods. Most of the ponds were still covered in ice.

Wansford Canal held a Little Grebe and nothing else. Not seen a Water Vole there for well over a year and suspect Mink are to blame.

Finally the beck at Nafferton had a showy Kingfisher but again no Water Voles.

You don't have to apologise for Peter Levy, Michael. We have to cope with the Harry and Christa show!

Hi,
Been down to see the possible lesser scaup at Hatfield Moors this afternoon. didn,t think it was one myself, only very small patches of white behind the bill, brown back and tamer than the robin that feeds out of my hand back at home. Looked more like a hybrid to me, but when I got home I logged on to the moors site and found that it has now been confirmed by Martin Garner as a first year Lesser Scaup.

What is the crack with these Arctic redpolls at Hatfield Moor near Doncaster. Dragons Pit & Dragon Pit South? Is it a huge area to cover regards finding the Redpoll flocks?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Wolfbirder
Link below for map of area

http://www.thmcf.org/maphat.htm

No 12= Prison Lake South (Coues's Arctic Redpoll)
No 22= Dragon Pit Area (Coues's Arctic Redpoll)
No 23= Boston Park Lake + Car Park (Lesser Scaup)

So from map it looks as though the birds are all fairly close together, hope to get down myself over the weekend.

@Liverpool Bob, I will use the RSPB bird call identifier, good advice. I've heard them drumming before when I've been various places like the North Yorks Moors near Helmsley with a friend, but not yet seen one. I'm making it my mission to see a Woodpecker of any variety this year, if it kills me (hopefully not!)

On a more cheery note, there are still numbers (at least 5) still around the North Duffield Carrs/Bubwith Ings area :t:

Ollie, you might have some joy with whatever the modern day equivalent of MAFF is. I used to work for the Ministry years ago, and one of the agricultural officers was responsible for such events - especially if it was on farming land.

DEFRA is the new MAFF.
I know, I`m a Vet Nurse.

cheers lawts and clare, rang defra and the local council, who both refused to take any responsibilty. spoke to the uni, but i doubt anything will be done. will keep an eye on it, hopefully its just the melting of the snow has caused a build of pollutants that are normally more diluted rather than any severe pollution

Also you could try the website Xeno Canto, they have a huge choice of birds and various calls.

The 'kick' (almost like a fast burst of a squeeky dog toy if that makes sense) of the Greater-spotted Woodpecker that would be very useful to learn. Once you learn it you'll be seeing GSWs all over the place. Often they call from the tops of trees.

If you can get to Tophill Low they are usually seen at the feeding station.

I refer to them as 'chickpeckers', it's such a distinctive far-carrying sound. I don't recall seeing a single one last year before hearing it.
