is it just me or has the rise in temperature had an adverse effect on the wildlife community?

my patch was virtually dead today very little of note with the exception of a single willow warbler and a solo green sandpiper. (two firsts for me).

even the snakes stayed at home...:C

Message for JOESPY,
Hi Joe, did you get back to see the Black Necked grebes, there are now four on Boston Park Lake, three of which have been there for about three weeks. For once yesterday one of them was obliging and came close to the hide. Got some half decent shots, and only need a Slav now for the full set of Grebe pics.

Joint Photo of the Week that Chiff for me Doc along with Dave's middle BGG ....tops..!!
Joe

Thanks Joe!!!! Dave's wins it for me though;and no..I can't get 'multi-quote ' to work!!

Can I ask what setup you use? Am looking into getting into bird photography so am interested to find out. Excellent photos by the way.

Rach

Hi Rach
I use canon eos 7D + 300mmf 2.8 lens + x2 converter. I hand hold(sorry if that sounds rude!) as I like to ramble about. But explains why my shots will never be pin sharp like Marcus Conways!
There will be cheaper ways of getting great results than this though.Check out the photography forum !!

slav grebes at swilly

Talking of Slavs, anyone know if the bird that was at Swillington Ings is still around? Saw it in it's winter drab but would love to get a sight of a full summer kit, no chance at getting over Barton for at least 3 weeks but could do Swilly on the way to work.

if you check the S W I G web sight i am sure BOB L saw the slav grebe on friday at bowers also common tern seen;)

The Slav was still at Swilly this morning and is in breeding plumage. Couldn't be sure if I saw it, all but one bird was in focus and the only one I wasn't sure about (at distance) could have been a little grebe.
Had my first swallow of the year along with ruff, LRP, willow warblers and a few common terns to bump up the year tally.

Excellent views of a short eared owl near West End Quarry, Blubberhouses this afternoon. Quartering fairly close to where we stopped the car and then sat on a post. Seemed quite settled and still there when we eventually left.

Getting there...
Great few hours at Hatfield today... glorious weather, 4 grebes, first LRPs of the year, a few other bits and bobs, and the photo below shows my highlight of the day! What a beauty!

I also had a potentially interesting redpoll that I'm torn between Mealy and Lesser for, which I've posted in the Yorks Redpoll thread if anyone fancies a look.

No - but I caught up with it. It showed really well hunting in the open on North Lagoon before flying across it. I have a few ropey photos - it was too distant really for my kit but dead chuffed.

Marvellous isn't it. I'm stuck with going to the NEC tomorrow and there's purple heron in county.
Got my first willow warbler of the year driving home with the window down. Stopped at traffic lights and heard that plaintive warble from bushes by the roadside.

Anybody know of the access arrangements to Tophill on Monday should the Purple Heron still be around? Can't get there tomorrow! Seem to remember something about the reserve being closed on a Monday?!?!

Glad you labelled them record shots James, as with my extremely jealous eyes I could only just make out that it was a purple heron;)
Any chance of you sort of feeding the bird a bit so it hangs around till I can get there?
Record shots now on the blog. Porn views for this species.

Porn views? You mean your videos are grainy through over use?

A 3-2 win as well, good day.

Im definitely smiling!

It was half 5 and the heron was at about 150m range - brilliant through a scope in the open but less good trying to take photos with my grainy nikon at 1600 ISO to facilitate hand holding.
