Pugneys - bit of a rant!

On both of my visits this week the hide on the nature reserve lake has been locked by 3:15pm. When you are waiting for the light to fade to have a better chance of seeing Bittern here this 'new' habit of the park workers is not going to be a happy partnership!!!

On Wednesday I called in on the way back from Wintersett on my bike and it was already locked by 3:25pm and then today whilst sat in there watching a Kingfisher on the post in front of the hide the bloke turned up on his motorised buggy to lock up at 3:10pm.........all he could muster was that the place closed at 4:30pm, sorry, yes, but its barely past 3pm!!!! Think I will be calling into the office on my next visit as the sight of 3 Bitterns together like I had in February around 4pm may be a thing of the past. Not good at all.

Rant over ;)

On the birding front - Bittern been seen all week here and still a Scaup knocking about in the general area but mobile.

You want the car park at Anglers CP. When you get there check the chalk board which is just out of the car park on the path to Anglers, it may save you some time. Birds will generally switch between Anglers and Wintersett so you may get up to date gen on the locations. I'd be hoping they're on Anglers, both big stretches of water but easier to see on Anglers.

Thanks James.

Ended up going to infocus and buying my first scope, thanks to all that recommended them, they were very knowledgable and not at all pushy, ended up getting a great scope for a good price, now I just have to wait for Santa to bring it back!!

Probably too early to tell but the bird newsites are awash with Waxwing reports,e.g. 30+ at Crown Point, Leeds today. Is this the start of an influx or is it typical for this time of year?

P.S.I've just noticed that the first British record is from York, 1680

Looks pretty heavy to me. Hope to have some outside work like I did last time we had a good year, even better if they stay until January for an easy year tick.

Just discovered a mistake in my life list. My first Waxwings were in West Park 1990, not 1980. An easy walk up from my flat opposite the old Yorkshire Water works. Wife not impressed

Plenty of time Andy. If you don't catch up with any in West Yorkshire I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities around York. Good to hear you've finally got the go-ahead for the new house. I expect to hear regular reports from the Ings :t:
