Hey all, I'm a 15 year old west london based birder who's been lurking on Birdforum for a while and decided to at last join up and actually contribute... and I thought that this might as good a place as any to start. I've only been birding seriously for about 2 years and my BOU life list probably resembles a few of your year lists, although I've had my fair share of decent birds, the most interesting of which was probably a common sandpiper in a local front garden, as much for location as anything. I'm hoping to add a couple of real bogeys to my list this spring though, so if I were feeling a little more cheesey I'd probably say watch this space... anyway 'nuff rambling, its nice to see there are plenty of other birders my age out there

Thanks

I count birds in the hand, but thats only because I see them in the wild when they get released! There are some rules (BOU I think?) that say you can't count it until 24hours after its been ringed, but I'm not strict...at the end of the day, it's your list. Count what you like!

Hi everyone, im a 15 year old birder in Mississauga, Ontario - near Toronto. My life is list is about 240. I've only ever met one other birder under 30, so its nice to see that there are quite a few, even if they all seem to be in Britain.
My best bird I've seen would probably be a self-found record early red-eyed vireo, although i have zero proof.:-C

50+ Sand martin? is that not 5+ i visited a quarry a couple mile away from there this mornin and there were still none!

Hi Nick can confirm that it was 50 Sand Martins down at Brockholes Quarry.
(McSpudd is my son) We were down there between 6 and 7 in the evening to see the whimbrel (though as you may have read not to sure they are whimbrel). We saw 5 or so (sand martins) come in early on and more and more joined as we watched. Plenty of midges down there to feed on.

Would be interested in the quarry you where at.

Had a good morning out at some of my Dad's land today. The place was inundated with finches with 200+ Goldfinchs, 50+ Greenfinches and 30ish Chaffinches. Also around 150 Yellowhammer, a small flock of Corn Bunting among them. Reed bunting numbers at about 20 too witha 2 flocks of Fieldfares, 1 of around 15 birds the other around 50.

Very glad that my Dad told me about this place and im ringing down there soon. Aparently you can also find Linnet and Redpoll even though they evaded me this morning

Thanks for the greets all,
early morning at my local patch of Ravenscourt park and the river at chiswick eyot didn't turn up much apart from 3 presumed newly arrived chiffchaffs (they don't seem to winter here) and the local mistle thrushes now seem to be sitting on eggs. 2 redwings still at ravenscourt came ridiculously close, to within about arm's length at one point and a group of 8 high over north was the only real movement for such a clear day.

Hi Derek.

The quarry i visit is Lightfoot green - u heard of it?

it's my local patch near broughton. If you look on the Fylde Bird website, i report my sightings there. Not much at the mo, but i look forward to spring migrants coming back there. I think it has more Sand martins than Brockholes mid-summer, cos most at brockholes are transit, altho some do breed.

Cheers.
