Nice one ColonelBlimp. I've never had Golden Eagle before, but another trip to Scotland should sort that out...where did you get yours?

I have my Gold D of E trip this summer in the lakes. I go quite near Haweswater so hopefully the bird might appear over a ridge. Or maybe I can persuade the teacher (who is also a birder :t:) to give us a lift there in the evening...;)

Got back from Cornwall today. Had c40 Manx shearwaters past Rame head on the 16th, lifer 212, also an adult male Cirl bunting, but Im not counting this as it is almost definatly an introduced bird for the breeding programme. Other good birds were Whitethroat, Whimbrel, Peregrine, Raven but not alot else. Year list is 167

Sounds like you had a busy day MCspudd! What was your mystery bird like? It's still a bit early for Golden Oriole. Could it have been a Green Woodpecker in strong sunlight? It might have been an escaped cagebird. What was it like? eg. bill and leg colour, plumage colours, habits etc. sounds very interesting...

...a Brunian Birder...
Have returned from 3 days in the New Forest! To be honest I was very tired by the end of the second day and I was starting to stumble on some easy identifications, but this is what I think I saw...

Buzzards (many of)
1 Hobby (i think, a little larger than a kestrel but very unsure on the identification, defo not a Buzzard)
Many calling Curlew and Lapwing
A possible Wood Warbler but again i.d problems
Tawny Owls calling all night and maybe a Nightjar (Not sure on song i.d. so any ideas?!?)
Cuckoos calling everywhere, along with Skylarks and maybe Woodlarks (i.d. problem again, really tired at that point!)

Dawn Chorus produced an array of sound and was a great wake up call, even if others didnt think so!

Nightjars "churrrrrr". The only other possibility for your falcon (if your sure it was 1) is a peregrine. Hobbies look like giant swifts....
Wood warblers ar quite bright yellow- and noticably bigger than willow/chiffs.
Woodlarks genrally are more dumpy than sky and have shorter tails and lack a crest. They also have much bolder eye and moustachial stripes. They are more bulky and bigger than pipits.
Not sure on any other than the nightjars song....

Well it was gold and it definatly had black on it, i couldnt se it well but it was very close but i had to use the bins to se it, when i got the bins on it, it kept running away like i said it was a good runner.
