arrghh i dont know what to do.......today i went to the place where my parents saw the Cuckoo last week.We could hear em but they were really hard to pick up through the foliage.....after awhile i saw a glimpse of it far away landing on a tree and just as i got my scope out about 30 really loud bikers rumbled through scaring the Cuckoo away:C anyway so do these "glimpses" count?

Yeah, of course. If not, you would just get a load of birders always trashing the countryside for better views... hmmm sounds unfortunately like what actually happens in many cases! Most people count things they even if they've only heard them - its just very annoying and makes you want to see the bird again!

Im off to College in september to do Countryside Management, got my place on the course, all I need now is the grades. After that I would like to go to Uni to do Ecology or Environmental sciences then eventually become a consultant Ecologist or warden, maybe abroad eventually.

UEA in Norwich has what is generally thought to be the best Ecology course in Europe... although a friend on the course said the teaching isn't actually that good! Entry requirements are quite high because I think a lot of people want to go on the course, though I suspect past experience might be useful in helping you apply, and UEA let a load of my friends in even though they didn't quite make the grades...

Am I right in thinking you work at Dersingham Bog? I'm guessing you would do well to ask your colleagues about courses since they will have experience.

failed cuckoo.....

aarghh, why are Cuckoos so elusive? me and my dad went back to the carboot to try and get a better look at them......but they didnt show.....we could hear them now and then, but they were at the tops of the trees and were very sensitive to the slightest noise(stepping on a twig etc)but after while they didnt call so we assumed they had moved off.But at least i finally got Treecreeper on my yearlist:t:

Hi Robert, don't think we've met before, but living in Norfolk the chances are we've seen each other about! I do know Connor Rand very well though, and he told me you worked at Dersingham Bog ;) What exactly do you do there, I though you were a lot older than 15!? Is that Easton College by the way?

Hi jimmyg, Yes that is Easton College. At Dersingham Bog i've done all sorts of stuff lots of surverys Bird, Butterflies, moths, Beetle etc.., brash control, Electric fence maintence (got some nasty zaps!:C), Heath management, Maintence on machinery Tractor, Brushcutters, Chainsaws, Chipper and Glen Coe etc.... and going along to meetings with the site manager and I could keep going on and never stop3:)

One other great thing about volunteering at Dersingham Bog is that its not just the Bog its Paston Barns, Swanton Nover Great Wood and The Watch points and Holkham also known as Lady anns drive

P.s. Also I am involved in a Bat group working on Barbastelle bats. Hopefuly I will get a licence in handling bat soon.

But overall I Love it:loveme:

What time is bird?
Just got back from a bit of patchworking. Highlight for me was the heron which preened for about 10 seconds before doing precisely nothing. And a Little Ringed plover which sat stock still on a bank. Lovely weather too, of solid sheeting rain.

I bloody love patchworking. Fun fun fun for all the family!!!

The men in offices say that you can tick heard only birds on year lists but not life lists.

Of course it's up to you really what you want to do for your personal list, but if you want to compete with others then you need to be working to the same set of rules.

Martin Down

travelled to Martin Down to look for Nightingales and Turtle doves today, heard the latter but not seen(too well hidden in the bushes) no sign off any Nightingales:C(slightly worring).......although i did add a Raven which soared over calling(i think a new lifero:D) also got a sighting off a
weird bird(s) i think two were fighting in a bush making a funny rapid, loud call(pzz pzz pzz pzz pzz zz zz)i got a brief look at it,sort off like a pigeon with longer wings(fem Cuckoo?)

here are some pics of today......
no.1 me looking through my scope for Turtle doves(i really got to think about getting a haircut3:))
no.2 and 3 yellowhammers giving nice views(shame bout the pics..)

EDIT:anyone got any ideas about what my "weird bird"(s) is?
