Bird, what bird!
Hi everyone today i went to barrow lodge to see the velvet scoter again to get better photoes of it and i did see it but it was on the other side of the pond so i couldn't get it. After that i went to pendle hill to see the snow bunting but i got half way up the hill and went back down because it was freezing. So we went to farhaven to see the shag but we didn't but we did see 7 snipe, 10 curlew, 50+redshank, 20+ tufted, 4 cormarant, 3 fieldfare, 1 goldeneye and 1 little grebe. On the way back to my house we niped in to newton marsh and saw 100+ curlew, 10 golden plover, 1 buzzard and 40+ lapwing.

Cheers for the info Joseph:t: it was most probally a Bonnelis thinking back and looking on the interneto:D

Yes, Bonelli's seems most likely. I saw two Bonelli's Eagles this time last year so its definitely your best bet. You'll have good chances of seeing them again so I wouldn't worry too much. ;)

Happy to say that I have had 17 British ticks this year, bringing me to a total of 224 birds in Britain. My life list has also increased to 344 as a result of this. This biggish raise means its going to be harder to see more lifers next year, but I'm sure the coming year will be great anyway. How much has you guys' lists increased this year?

I have increased by 173 taking me to 173;), because I only started listing in February.
A stupid question but who is year listing next year?

Time spent wishing is time wasted!
I have too many exams and moving to uni location in september so unless I want to end on 150ish, I will just focus on new species and my Fylde list....

Well I'll be listing in the sense of recording what I see but I've never understood competitive birding, which I personally disagree with. When thousands of birders go to see a particular bird it's obviously not going to benefit a number of things.

I'm listing next year as usual. I want to beat 217 species for Britian and 179 for the fylde which are my highest for each (and both this years) however I may need to set those targets a little higher if I can see the Ring Necked Duck tomorrow.

Managed to see the Ring Necked Duck even though it had relocated todayo:D taking my British life list to 242.
Well done jonny:t:
I ticked Great Northern Diver today which takes me to 174, 1 away from my 2009 target.:-C
So tomorrow I have a choice, to try to see the RN Duck at Porth res. or try to find the Richards Pipit I dipped today. I cant see both, both are lifers, both would complete my target, WHAT SHOULD I DO:h?:

I would suggest that you go for the duck as there is more chance that a passerine such as Richard's Pipit would move...the duck should be more reluctant to fly.

Great image there Ash. Like Zac, I think you should go and see the Ring-necked Duck tomorrow instead of Richard's Pipit. The Ring-necked will be less likely to fly, and I've missed Richard's Pipit before. The latter is far more inconspicuous too. With the Ring-necked its likely just to slap bang right there, whilst the Richard's Pipit will be flighty and even if it is present in the area, you might not be able to see it. That's just my view, you can do otherwise if you wish. Best of luck whichever bird you decide to see! ;)

YES, I persuaded my mum to try to see both. Hopefully It will take my Life List to 176!! yay...
OR I could dip both and be extremely annoyed--->:C:C:C:C:C

Well that's great! Presumably the two locations aren't that far apart from each other? If so then you have a good chance. Best of luck on seeing both birds. You could end the year amazingly if you're lucky. :king:
