Had a cracking day out with a friend today driving around west and north-west Norfolk. I managed to get 1 life tick, 4 county ticks and 2 year ticks.

life tick Tundra Bean Goose (also year and county)

County ticks- Raven, Yellow Legged Gull (also year tick)and finally Red Kite.

Well that's great! Presumably the two locations aren't that far apart from each other? If so then you have a good chance. Best of luck on seeing both birds. You could end the year amazingly if you're lucky. :king:
Thanks, they are about 1hour /1 hour 30mins apart, thats why we could only see one. But we will get up early so I can spend quite a bit of time at each location.

Interesting day today, went up to this mountain called the sleeping lion to do a bit of birding... Not much was seen ( crag martins, sardi warblers ) but on the way down i spotted a bird hopping around some rocks and initial thoughts were what a wierd blackbird....

But the jizz was wrong so i got out my scope to have a look. It looked black from a distance but in the scope it was more of a glossy blue color. Im pretty sure I had a Blue rock thrush there which would be a great lifer for me!! luckily i got some poor record shots which might help so ill upload em latero:D

Ticked the Richard's Pipit today but the weather wasn't great so I decided to leave the RN Duck until next year. Still, I equaled my target of 175 of my life list.

Many congratulations Ash on the Richard's Pipit. A great way to end the year!

TJ, that sounds like Blue Rock Thrush to me! Blue Rock Thrush is one of those archetypal mountain birds in the Mediterranean, and there's always a good chance you'll see one if you go at such altitude. When your next on MSN I'll have a check for you if you want and confirm if it is a Blue Rock Thrush. Or conversely of course you can just post it on Birdforum where you'll get people who have seen the bird before's reactions. ;)

Tomorrow not just a whole new year, but a whole decade of birding awaits us young birders! I wonder what the coming year and the 9 years that follow it will hold, and if we'll still be members here by the end of the coming decade! Hope you all have a great day if you're getting out tomorrow to year tick the commoner species. I'll be getting out at the weekend hopefully and just at home tomorrow I hope to tick upwards of 20 species for the year.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi guys,

The weather wasn't great outside today at all, basically very sleety. I wasn't able to get out during the day but I did manage 11 species from my garden in the form of the commonest species. The best bird of the year so far has to be 15 Fieldfare. :-O

Robert, well done, Raven's a big bird for Norfolk - only a handful of records each year at most! You should probably submit it to the county recorders.

My year list is on a brilliant 12 species. :-O I am aware that's pretty rubbish! Mind you, I just haven't been able to get out of the city since New Years Day. Any trip outside the city will mean more year ticks, and I have this need for them... I think I'm going to be going for a walk out in the countryside tomorrow, so hopefully I can increase up to 20, I'd be happy with that. I'm eagerly anticipating my first birding trip out next week. Its awesome how every bird counts at first. :t:

Hey guys, can I ask, what make of binoculars do you have? Be precise about the model if you can.

I've got Opticron Verano BGA PC Oasis roof prism binoculars with a magnification of 10X50. Opticron in my opinion are a great make; you can get some long lasting, good bins for under £300 with great visual quality and magnification. I could stay put with my bins for ages! Leica, Swavaroski and Zeiss bins all cost way too much.
