Happy new year all!
My yearlist is currently at 37 after an hour birding locally today. Still missing some fairly obvious birds ie Greenfinch. Yesterday I was in no condition to do anything but sleep :p
I have a pair of 8X42 Avian Fs (sold by ace optics).
They were just under £300 and were the pair that I liked the most out of the ones I could try, I absolutely love them and they've got a great image only problems are my pair don't have intermediate stops for the pull out eyecaps and occasionally I get the odd bit of straylight, usually just as the light begins to fade. I think it's due to my pupil expanding or something.

Edit: forgot to add I got a great christmas present in the form of a lifer, a woodcock on christmas eve and the next day near my cousin's in Leeds. Only ruined by finding out that the "weird bird" my sister had seen on the 23rd in our garden and had run upstairs to tell me was also apparently a woodcock and I missed it!

Robert, well done, Raven's a big bird for Norfolk - only a handful of records each year at most! You should probably submit it to the county recorders.

Thanks James I will be submiting it.

Joseph I also have a pair of pentax papilio 8.5x21 (very very close focus. v. gd for insects) for summer time.

and finally I managed to kick start my year list today ending with a total of 95 highlights were- Bullfinch, L. Owl, Tree Sparrow, Willow Tit, Red Kite, Twite, Rock Pippet,Water Rail, White-front Geese, Snow Goose and a Woodcock.

Doing the RSPB west norfolk bird race tomorrow wish me luck lol.

Good luck Robert, 95 is a great total. Your well in the lead of the year list game. A few of those birds are lifers for me.
Its not fair, everyone is seeing Woodcocks and Im not:-C. Thats another bird I might get at Lake Vyrnwy if I volunteer again at easter cos' I doubt one will fly through my garden.

Lol my yearlists on about 4:-O But im birding tomoz so it should go up:t:

I got a surprise a few days ago when i was watching reintroduced vultures gliding on the thermals at Alcoy. Mum pointed out a bird flying low over the grags, not big enough for a vulture but massive indeed, I got my scope on it and nearly had a heartattack! it was a Golden eagle! no mistaking it with its spread out fingertips and large bulky wings.. It looked like an immature due to the white lines at the end of its wings, what a way to end the year!:t:

I also managed to see a Blue rock thrush aswell;)

I recently added up my lifelist again and it stands at 175, more than i thoughto:D

On another note, went out again today! to a place called pego marsh, Unfortanatly its hunting season so there were gunmen everywhere:C
It was still a great day out though with lots of cattle egret, little egret, Marsh harrier, Kingfisher, Greywag, Kestrel, Crag martin, Crested lark, Lapwing and others. Warblers were in abundance but i struggled to id most of them...

On the way back in the car mum once again spotted a large pair of raptors flying over the mountains, We stopped and watched and one luckily landed on a high craggy outcrop quite close to us. I got bueatiful views through the scope of what i think was an immature Bonnelis Eagle, unluckily my european field guide was accidently left at home so i had to film a bit of footage through my scope for later confimation. Even better was, while watching the eagle i heard a strange call coming from the mountain behind me, so i turned round, scanned the top and came upon a Chough! With a bright red bill and black body it was unmistakable!:t::t::t:

I'm surprised that you could better the amount of birds I seen in a year in just 3 days! Looks better for me this year though, 13 species so far, which I'm pretty pleased with.

Well done on the chough and that eagle TJ. You're getting some amazing birds over there. I can only drool!

Managed to get to the wetlands at barnes today and had some nice birds including water rail, bittern and jack snipe. Also, it was nice meeting you today Bill hope you got the bittern, it turned up at the next hide after you went back.

Brilliant stuff, TJ! Choughs are my favourite species of crow behind Azure-winged Magpie, they are just superb to see! If you need help with the eagle, I can discuss it with you on MSN. ;)

Its kind of horrible to feel deprived of birding first thing in the year. My year list is a measly 18, I haven't been outside Aberdeen yet due to being busy, and its very cold. I'm looking forward to birding next weekend, where my list can hopefully shoot up.

Hi all remember the young birders blog at youngbirders.blogspot.com it is pretty dead at the moment. With coursework, exams, more time spent in the field and other blogs etc to run I am considering handing over administration powers to someone else to keep it alive.

Anyone interested?

My year list is on 90 with Ring-billed Gull, Serin, Bonxie, Black-throated Diver, Firecrest, Water Pipit, Scaup and Black-necked Grebe being amongst the highlights.

Still haven't been outside the city, and wont' be until the weekend as school starts tomorrow... My year list has now increased from 18 to 22, a surprising rise. Its quite interesting just how many species you can see within a single city. ;)
