Young Birder (241 Viewers)

Just been adding up some totals for different types of wildlife from my house.

Birds - 93 species (53 in garden)
Mammals - 7 species
Amphibians - 4 species
Bats (I know they are mammals) - 2 species
Butterflies - 9 species
Moths - 15 species (climbing rapidly)

Just wondering how this would compare to other peoples totals. I'm quite lucky in the fact that I've got an old railway track running behind my house with fields behind that. I am also close to the River Wyre so any birds that get flushed from there I can see them which helps for wader and duck species.

My house is probably far smaller and more urban than yours Johnny, but I do have a decent amount of birds seen from it, since it is on a migration route on the south coast!
In total 77 species, of which 43 were seen in it. highlights being Jay, Bullfinch, Brambling, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, 5 Thrushes, Black Redstart and Grey Wagtail. We've also had Honey Buzzard, Merlin, Hobby, Oystercatcher, Lapwing, Skylark, Tree Pipit, Fulmar, Wigeon, Little Egret, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Snipe, Yellow Wagtail, Ring-necked Parakeet, Redpoll, Siskin and Crossbill overhead. Mammals are a paltry five. Fox, Hedgehog, Grey Squirrel, and probably Brown Rat and several mice. And we've had mice in the house before! We've probably had about 15-20 butterflies, quite a few dragons and damsons, loads of moths (I never pay attention except with the Hawk Moths!), three Amphibians, one reptile (Slow Worm), and at least 3 Bats (Noctule, Pipistrelle and Daubenton's)

unbelievable views of a pair of Nightingale in a wood near me today. The Male was singing and accompanied by the female, both about 10 metres from path out in the open! Dad and I also saw one more Nightingale, but a very poor view, and we heard two more males singing, along with Pearl-bordered Fritilaries(one of only two sites they breed in sussex), a very distant Cuckoo and plenty of Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler

I'm determined over the Summer holidays to set up something for teenage birdwatchers as I as a keen seventeen year old birdwatcher are fed up of the RSPB Phoenix. I know I have been through this before but does anyone have any ideas about how this might work.

Its a tricky one , i guess one idea would be to arrange a field trip somewhere , for example , Rainham marshes and just post an invite on this forum ( or create a new thread for this ) , and add details of times , venue etc , and maybe get people interested in coming to contact you to give you an idea of how many people are likely to turn up :t:

I guess it depends how in depth you want to get , i think setting up a offical group would be more tricky to do and involve alot of red tape ??

yeah, a field trip would be good, or perhaps if some of the older people among us would be able to get a space on a campsite and everyone chip in for it. Three days in Norfolk or Scotland or somewhere would definitely be a lot of fun!

I think a good start would be a field trip at an agreed location, we can then take it from there. Unfortunately I'm doing my AS's at the moment so will not be free until July. Then on the 20th July, I'm off to Fair Isle. This means that I am unlikely to get organised until August but if we have a think we can set a date and a location (somewhere near a train station) and see what happens. Lets say Saturday 26th June for example as Summer exams will have finished by then. What do other people think?

What with all these megas turning up it got me thinking............
I like House Finch, but I also like Iberian Chiffchaff.

But........which is better?

There's only one way to find out! ;)
