Hi all,

Yeah, I know I am way behind on my blog, but I've just finished a post charting my arrival at Portland on my birding trip to Portland. The post includes me going round the obs garden for the first time in search of passerine migrants and also tells you how I did in a stop off on the way at Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath. If you could please read it that would be much appreciated, and comments would be greatly received. :t:

Thank you,

Joseph

my life has been devoid of year ticks for nine days now! suicide is the only alternative!

And I think, to answer your question TJ, everyone has started using the yearlist thread for everything and given up on the social thread!!

But we should bring this back, should we not?

I vote for keeping this one, definitely! I like the yearlist thread but this has alot more history and character, the yearlist thread just feels a bit new and soulless in comparison :p

I got my first scope today! An Opticron ES80 GA ED and I'm very excited about it, took it for a whirl around the river earlier and got it set up on the local reservoir although with such lovely weather everywhere was packed and I ended up pointing it in the direction of scantily clad people wherever I looked :p. A common sandpiper was the only exciting bird (no jokes please) today although with such lovely weather I'm not complaining really.

How long are you in the UK then TJ? Just popping back for a quick visit to grab the little gull etc and then back off to spain?

I missed a fly over SPOONBILL at a local nature reserve by 5 mins, only the 2nd record(the 1st was 22 years ago), dipped on a roosting LEO at the same site a week before that,
but i did self find a MED GULL again at the same place last week.........

Nice photo MB. Surely a good enough reason for everyone to keep ths thread up!

Birding ain't just about lists, it's about Experiences!

apologies for extreme corniness, but sometimes it is needed!

anyway, I could rant on for hours, but my Swifts are back, to enjoy a four-month summer vacation, leaving me too happy to complain. And like any true summer vacation, the bad weather and pesky kids will be enough to drive them mad! See, they are actually screaming in anguish, cos they've lost the Aspirin and Prozak!

anyway, I thnk it would be terrible to let this thread go down the gutter, hopefully you all agree?:brains:

Obviously its about experiences, and I hope that the yearlist thread doesn't come across as just a list based thread. Quite a lot of us do share our experiences in that thread I hope. I definitely agree we should keep this thread; its fantastic and is very original. Bare in mind though this thread can never be deleted though by any young birders as the original creator of this thread doesn't even come on here anymore. ;)

Totally agree i created the yearlist thread just as an extra piece of interest and don't want it to have an impact on this original and brilliant thread.

sorry for coming on a bit strong before, I agree the yearlist thread is really good, and some good stories told on there too. My one concern though is that it isn't really the place to say anything you've seen that isn't a year tick, e.g. a Reed Warbler singing in my garden today, a little area in urban sussex, several miles from any suitable breeding habitat, and too late, I would have thought, to be a migrant. I've already seen Reed Warbler this year, so without this thread I wouldn't really have anywhere to put this! That's nothing against the yearlist thread, just putting every unusual bird you see on there is a bit out of context with the thread. Anyway, I'm in a huge rush, need to get to school in about 20 minutes, so Adios!!

I might as well post some stuff here, Most of you know I had a Squacco Heron on Sunday. Its been pretty quiet on the year tick from for me (well with common stuff, Cornwalls had all the rarities:t:)
Im in Wales at Lake Vyrnwy next week doing RSPB volunteer work, and hoping to get to Rutland and Slimbridge before!!!
