Young Birders appreciated

I'm a relatively young birder too,18 to be specific.I started birding when I was 12 or 13 may be and have not looked back since then.I've recorded around 150 species so far and have photographed almost 50 with my own camera. To top it all,I've even started a blog on birding and other things.

Hi Harshit, nice to see a new young birder on board ;)

Had a bit of a terrifying incident today when I was cycling back from a quick check of the river nearby. A guy in a black mercedes came at at least 40 mph (in a 20 zone) down a no entry and nearly knocked me off my bike. He then shouted at me from his car! I was hugging the left so tightly (because its such a small road) that had he hit me I would've been mincemeat.

Well there was nothing on the river and certainly nothing worthy of near death! I was quite shook up afterwards :-C

Just to bring things to a lighter note I'm hoping to get down to surrey to see some nightjars sometime next week so hopefully I'll see some new birds for this year.

Yeah I'm alright now cheers birding maniac :eat: Had my fair share of dodgy drivers before but that guy took the biscuit! I visited a nearby site which I hadn't been to before (other than when I was really young), Gunnersbury triangle LNR, had two singing chiffchaffs and looks like it may be a good location for firecrest/YB warbler in the autumn I reckon. Probably jinxed it now but we'll see!

Wow! That's certainly not bad! I think I've only ever photographed about 10 species of birds so you've definitely beaten me.

What equipment do you use?

Welcome Harshit!

The 'near miss' sounds pretty scary... stupid drivers! It happened to me once 3yrs ago in romania when stray dogs started chasing me and I nearly swerved into a car... but that was more my fault!

As to photographed species - 355 - but that would be because not all are British, and not all are exactly great shots...
(my camera - lumix DMC-FZ18 (a 'bridge' camera), I hope to buy an slr one day because the results possible exceed my camera by miles.

Looking forward to seeing some of your shots with your new camera, Jonny!

I'm off down to Somerset tomorrow afternoon virtually as soon as term ends for the summer. Going down to visit family and won't be able to get online. If that Little Bittern at Ham Wall made itself a little more obliging and was reported regularly I may considering popping up to see that, but I'd have to get it past my parents first. Regardless of me getting out birding or not, I should have a good time. Just hope I don't miss anything whilst I'm away! :eek!: I'll be back on around the 12th.

Cheers guys, have a good next couple of weeks, whether its bird free or not!

Seems this thread is going downhill probably due to the lack of birds around at this time of year. I've had arctic skua, manx shearwater and sandwich terns in the past week and am going on a local pelagic on the 22nd so hope to get some interesting seabirds ;)

Going out this afternoon with 3 target species: Mandarin, Green Sandpiper and my favourite bird the Hobby so will report back later ;)

Had an outing today in which I didn't get any year ticks, but it was a pleasant day anyway. Started the day at Girldeness with a slightly disappointing seawatch in which the best thing I saw was a single Manx Shearwater. A trip just south of Aberdeen to the cliffs in search of Black Guillemot proved unsuccessful too, but I wasn't entirely sure where to go and will probably return with someone we know that knows where they are.

Popping down to the Ythan was more satisfying however, with the 4 Spoonbills there quickly making an appearance and spooning not too far away from us together. Always a lovely sight. Also at the Ythan some fantastic views of a fishing Osprey were obtained and a single Ruff was nice to see amongst a group of 20 summer plumaged Golden Plover. Finally a stop off at Blackdog in search of Surf Scoter (which I tried for 5 times last year and failed each and every time) proved yet another failure - it really is liking picking a needle out of a haystack, finding the so called Surfie there! I'm probably going back out there tomorrow with Simeon (mr sim) from Birdforum who is currently in Scotland and is visitng the East Coast tommorow. Hopefully will increase my chances of seeing it, as he said he'd stick around until he found it. ;)

Good birding to you all

Joseph
