Back in England at the sec. Extremely pleased that I managed not to dip on the Stilt Sandpiper at Lodmoor today. Took about 4 hours to finally see it... Luckily followed a guy that refound the bird near the Tern island. Brilliant close up views! Pretty chuffed as it was almost certain that views would be distant.

Also was very lucky to pop into the obs at Portland the right time as they had just caught a female Melodious Warbler in the net - Lovely to see in the hand. Ticked it when they released it and it landed on a tree in the garden. 2 lifers today, good stuff :t:

I'm glad you're having a great time in Wales Marcus, hope you managed to see Chough and I will look forward to hearing more about your trip! :t:Joseph

Sadly never found the elusive Choughs; on the next trip to Wales I plan on going to South Stack cliffs were I will have a much better chance of seeing them.

Further bad news I dipped on the pec sandpiper at Martin Mere this is the second time I have been unlucky with this bird!! Were as my Dad went the next day whilst I was in work and it was showing really well!!!!

On a completely different topic, any off you guys going to Birdfair this August??

Probably will go some point over the birdfair weekend. Maybe on the Saturday though will depend on my a-level results being adequate and the cost of a train ticket. Had a great time last year and found the volunteering opportunity in Brazil.

Yep! Its the best place in the UK to see them. I won't say you can't fail but the chances of seeing them are very high.

Also if your into butterflies the heathland have the rare Silver-studded Blue butterfly, its the Welsh form so not as much black on uperwing of males.:t:
Might be to late now but you never know there might still be some out when you go, they were already out when I went a few weeks ago.

I'm heading down to bird fair, for the first year too. I'm looking forward too, looking like a good weekend.

Last night was brilliant- nightjar 226

Today i headed down to lepe cp and had hobby on the

Hi and welcome Marcus, I'm going to Birdfair on the Sunday.

195) Spotted Flycatcher
196) Stone Curlew (both Weeting Heath)

Yesterday went to Norfolk for the day, mainly for the White Rumped Sand'. Started off down in the Brecks, where Stone Curlew where showing fantastically well at Weeting. Then a quick walk down to the other hide, where a family Spotted Flycatchers are in residence right outside the hide. Then early afternoon a trip up to Titchwell for a couple of hours. Then a drive off to Snettisham for the high tide , which unfortunately was a lot later than I thought and was dark by the time the main flock of Dunlin came in, so no White-Rumped Sand' or Curlew Sandpiper just yet

I'm so jealous of you guys all going twitching! I don't have time to even go to my local patch.... The green yaffle in my garden is cheering me up a bit though. Also I'll probably be going to BirdFair, never been before so extremely excited!

Im back in shropshire, finishing the week on 227, but dipping both stilt sand and balearic shearwater. I was particularly dissapointed in portland bill (though the obs was great) with only 6 gannets, 2 herring gulls, 3 gbbg, and two shags passing in 2 hours sea watch.
I doubt ill get many (any?) yearticks in shropshire, but i might be able to get across to wales, maybe even try again for balearic.

Went out today with a couple of mates looking for butterflies, but whilst we were out we stopped off at Leighton Moss to see the juvenile Cuckoo that has been around for a few days, pretty decent views were obtained so 190 for the year now.

Now following you! Great blog so far, reminded me to update mine!

Update it then! ;)

Went to North Norfolk (and Lincolnshire) yesterday to see the White-Rumped Sandpiper thats been knocking around at Snettisham. On arrival we started to scan the wader flocks along the beach, coming across a juvenile Curlew Sand' and Little Stint. We then went into Shore hide and started to scan the mass of waders to our left, coming across two more Curlew Sands, this time immaculate summer adults as well as stacks of Little Tern. Eventually someone found the White-Rumper, and a quick look through his scope left me looking at the breast - only the breast - of the bird. A couple of us got a few more brief views before all of the waders went for a fly-around. Luckily when they landed the bird was showing fantastically well at the front of the flock, giving us all great views.
Then off to look for Monties. A bit of a wait left us with great views of a ringtail shooting across the fields.
We finished off the day at Frampton Marsh. A lone grounded Pink-Foot greeted us but then it was off to look for the Pec Sand', which was sleeping among the dock. At Reedbed hide a guy had it in his scope but no-one else could spot it, even through his scope! A bit later on we went round towards the visitor centre and started scanning the dock for waders. A lovely Wood Sand' but no sign of the elusive Pec. After this we went and waited for the Spotted Crake to show and right on queue it came out and performed fairly well for us.

196) Woodcock (missed off from a while ago)
197) Bar-tailed Godwit
198) Little Stint
199) Curlew Sandpiper
200) White-Rumped Sandpiper (couldn't resist putting this as 200!)
201) Little Tern
202) Montagu's Harrier
203) Spotted Crake
