Good day at the birdfair and Grafham water today, with three year ticks (Osprey, Black Tern, White Winged Black Tern). Now on 176 for the year. Also, plenty of volunteering opportunities similar to what I had in Brazil were available at the birdfair today, if anyone is going. Hopefully I might find something for next year.

I'm having a brilliant time, it's amazing. Did you see the nightingale being rung? That was amazing! I'm
Also looking at the volunteering opportunities- some really interesting things there!

Unfortunately missed the Nightingale. Saw Lesser Whitethroat being rung though. We probably passed each other today without realising it. Pleased you enjoyed it.

Quite probably :t: it was brilliant In that area. Are you going tomorrow? I'll been in the lectures tomorrow.
The nightingale was brilliant, I never expected it!
Missed the LW, though a friend of Mine was there.

No, I will not be around tomorrow. I have to confirm my university details and fill in various forms.

Went to Bird Fair yesterday and had a fantastic day; bought a few bits and bobs I needed. The highlights for me was meeting Simon King and also meeting another voluinteer who is doing Raptor Camp Malta this September.

Did anyone else go? What did you think of the Fair?

Off to Leighton Moss now, hopefully we see the otters that have been showing well. But if we dont see them the Bearded Tits and Marsh Harriers more than make up for it.

I am defo going to try and post more regularly on this thread!!

Spent 2 and a half hours looking for the Wryneck reported at Alexandra Palace early this morning but no luck. May try again later as it is only half an hour away by bus and walking.

Went again this afternoon and after 10 minutes was rewarded with cracking views. My first in the UK bringing my life list to 256 and my year list to 177.

Also a cracking WWBTern, shame the Teal wasn't as stunning as the Tern. Infact the teal was one of the most uninspiring birds I think I have ever seen.:-O

205) White-tailed Eagle (missed off, Lincs + Mull)
206) Eider
207) Long-tailed Duck
208) Sandwich Tern
209) Arctic Skua
210) Dartford Warbler
211) Buff-breasted Sandpiper
212) Wryneck

Went to Cromer for a week on holiday. On the first day we had a tea break at Titchwell, with a walk to the beach revealing a lovely summer pl fem LTD just off shore, with 4 Eider also. My dad also had an Arctic Skua which I missed! Also plenty of Sandwich Tern which up until then have eluded me. The next day a family trip to Sheringham allowed for a short stint at seawatching which yielded another Arctic Skua and 8 Common Scoter. On the Monday we went of to Minsmere, which was rather quiet, the best bird being the Arctic Skua which only my brother saw, me and my dad having gone off down the wader trail. :-C The Dartfords were easy to find on Dunwich Heath; within a few metres of entering past the toilets their calls were easily audiable and a short walk saw 3 birds being seen, 2 on the path. On the Friday we decided to head back to Titchwell, and after finding a fresh-in Spotshank and juv Curlew Sand we overheard the hide's volunteers radio crackle "can you head over to Parrinder Hide as we have a possible Buff-breasted Sandpiper". After a brisk walk over we arrived to see the bird not 10 feet away. This had me sprinting back to the car for my camera! The bird then showed amazingly well for about a hour, showing off all of its distinctive features, in which time the Curlew Sand had also approached to within 15 feet. After this perfect start me and my dad went off on an unsuccessful Greenish Warbler twitch - it last being seen an hour before we arrived - and on the way back to the car were treated to a soaking, the rain ruining my telescope :C ! Then finally on the Saturday we followed RBA all day and headed off to the Wryneck at Winterton, which also showed fantastically well at close range. Pictures to be added later.

Sam :gn:

PS - Oh, and a very big welcome to all of our new members! :hi: I hope you have a happy few years here!

I love Buff-breasted Sandpipers, not seen 1 in about 2 years so hoping for 1 in Durham this Autumn. Looking forward to seeing pics if it was only about 15 foot away!:eek!:

I'm finally done with my eBird lists (for the US, Costa Rica ones are waiting). I've got 433 for the US this year and 258 for Illinois (198 for my county). I've been to Texas a lot this year, so my year list there is over 318 (I didn't eBird on a big day there).

Buff-breasted Sandpipers are just starting to show up here in IL, but I have yet to get out to the sod farms west of me to find them.

Back from birdfair today, had an amzing time, talking to people from all over the world and spending lots!
Highlighs were meeting Simon King, Bill Oddie, Johnny Kingdom, Nick Baker, Seeing the Nightingale being rung, Correctly identifying all of the birds on the two quizzes I entered (US Birds and Bird OBservatories) and just simply being at birdfair.
Also Managed 1 Year tick so up to 228 for the year!

Must have missed you today. I also didnt know about the Nightingale! Or was that Fridays bird? Best bird I saw being rang was my second only Lesser Whitethroat this year. Other highlights of birdfair were Simon Kings speech - always inspiring - and my mum forking out for a new family telescope to replace the one damaged last week! B :)
Anyway, got one year and life tick today in the form of Eybrooks Cattle Egret. Showed well at a distance before showing a lot closer at a different location for about 5/10 mins after which it flew of to roost.

213) Cattle Egret

Very well done Ash, what a beauty! Would love to have the privilege of seeing Aquatic Warbler, let alone seeing one in the hand and getting a great photo like that, you must feel chuffed. :t:
