im in norfolk then. i reckon id easily win with 4 hours at titchwell tho.

hmm...titchwell is rubbish!;)
On the 14th of may(i think) i have a penciled in breckland bird race. So while I wont get the variety of species/habitats as the rest of you i'll still try my best. Last year I managed 94 species, with the first being skylark singing at 3:40 am and the last being grey partridge at 4pm. Not bad i thought for intensive agriculture, monoculture pine forest, a graasy heath and a few gravel pits. ;)

Ok, Jyothi, I have had good experience with April for migrants, and I think we would get a bit more passage too. I thought it would be better to stick to just to one site, as a lot of us are simply not able to go to multiple sites in one day, but you do have a valid point, has anyone got any thoughts on this?

How young is 'young'?
Sorry, we don't allow chavs.

Dave one site is pointless, as I said the habitat is going to vary immensely. I wouldn't be able to pass 50/60 at any one site in Devon unless I had the entire day, which I wouldn't.
Tom is going to win easy if he has Titchwell.
Discuss it nearer the time.

Ok, I see your point and we will probably do that but the only thing is that some people cannot do multiple sites. As you said, discuss it nearer the time.

i would be happy either way round, but birding from 4:30AM-8:00PM on 3rd May would probably just clinch it for me ;), so i think it would be fairer if we stuck to one site, plus it would mean the best birder wins not the run around tick, tick, tick birder ;)

But it wouldn't show who was the best birder, it would show who managed to pick the right reserve on the right day, like titchwell or minsmere is obviosly going to win over my patch! And the whole point of bird races is not to prove who's the best birder, it's to see who can see the most birds in a day, so you do have to run around and tick.
Cheers for your comment about the barn owl shots, trust me they're really not great on my screen, but hey...i've added the trip report and a piece about the id.

4 lifers!?!?!?! :C
no i just stayed at home

i bet that includes ross's goose though ;)

Yeah it does actually along with Shorelark, Lap bunt and Grey Partridge (dont laugh ;))

In a way i'm kind of glad you stayed at home, I dont want to drop further down the surfbirds rankings do i?;)

Think I shall be takin part in this bird race as well now I've joined the young birders site...

I would recommend multiple sites, but there are pros and cons for both ... I think it all depends on how many can do multiple sites, but I do think having a single sight would be a bit pointless, as it would entirely depend on location... If its only one site I'll do Holme as I know it inside out...

im in norfolk then. i reckon id easily win with 4 hours at titchwell tho.

If its multiple sites I'll see ya there ;) Easily win?! Brave words indeed... ;) B :)

I would also defo prefer April to May. More common migrants and variety...

good to see some of you on the surfbirds rankings, hope the yearlists are goin ok,

Connor

I can see conflict here... I suppose the best way to solve this is by democratic vote
Please give your blunt preferences:
Which?
April
May

Which?
Single site
Multiple site

Quick polls on the topic on the right of the page here http://youngbirders.blogspot.com

That should settle it

Not surprised about Grey Partridge, I've only ever seen them once when I dipped the Black-eared Kite, they are getting pretty rare now, at least round here. I got a lifer today, or at least a confirmed one, I am 90% sure I saw them a few years ago but cannot be sure as I was only little.
Stunning views of RB merganser, number 192....... lol I really need to get that up a bit. Year list 107, think I saw a Little owl but could have been pattern in wood. When I go to Elmley next and that pattern is not there then I'll add it ;).

yes but just multiple is too vague, if we say multiple then someone could go to ten sites with someone else going to two, so we have to have more specific options.
At this stage i will change it to multiple or single, later on, if multiple is chosen then i will do a poll asking about the number of sites. Is that ok?

EDIT: sorry cant change it because people have already voted. it will have to do, sorry about that
