Hey guys,
Pretty chuffed with what you could call a day of 'car birding'! There have been snow showers here in Aberdeenshire throughout the day, so quite a lot of the time it was hard to birdwatch when I was out birding today. Didn't get out the car hardly at all or stay out in the open because it was really cold. However, at my first stop in Peterhead Harbour in the morning, before the snow showers started, I managed to get a lifer, a second-winter Iceland Gull. There have been a couple of these birds hanging around in the Harbour on and off all winter, but they're hard to locate due to the amount of other gulls also by the Harbour. This time though, virtually as soon as we stopped there was a pure, ivory white second-winter Iceland Gull, so much whiter and more different than the other gulls in the harbour. It couldn't have been that much more satisfying. I got great and prolonged views of the bird too, through the scope and bins. I'm delighted to have seen it as Iceland Gull is a tricky bird to see (hence why I hadn't seen one until today!). :t:
At Strathbeg I missed out on the Snow Geese as it started snowing heavily when we arrived. Even in the comfort of the visitor centre you couldn't see through the windows, which were completely steamed up and wet due to the snow. However, when there was a break in the snow showers a Peregrine showed itself, a bird we hadn't seen for the year. That was all there though. The visibility was just very poor. Having a look for the Great White Egret before going to Strathbeg was also unsuccessful, but I wasn't too surprised as it hadn't been reported for a while. Whilst looking for the Egret though I managed to see my first Red-legged Partridges of the year, with a few birds close to the riverbank.
So now I'm on 108 species. For me, that's a great total for one month, and the best January I've ever had by far. Didn't quite manage 110, but I'm not fussed. It's been a great month. :t:
