What a day and what a bird. The Hoopoe at Heysham showed brilliantly giving great views less than 20 metres away. A male Redstart was also flitting around the bushes next to the Hoopoe!! My first wheatears and wimbrels take me up to 158.

Well done Birding maniac, that's quite an impressive list! I'm on 90 now after my first willow warbler a couple of days ago. Its a shame as I've missed a number of commoner wintering species this year but my mum is now able to drive again (she was ill, not banned!) so with some extra free time and ability to travel I'm hoping to see some more good birds soon!

Some nice birds there Alex, well done. And Jonny, what a day and what a bird indeed! Very well done and some nice photos! ;)

By the way, I've written the first part of my account of the Portland trip. This post describes my trip to Chew Valley Lake, where I saw some nice birds and got my holiday off to a good start. As usual, comments are much appreciated if you wish to read it. ;)

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi everyone, thanks for all the well dones and stuff, but I think i am just lucky. My parents are into birding so I can be out every weekend, and I had two solid weeks of birding in Norfolk. To Rokermartin- I have been twitch quite afew times, and that is my honest total, I understand its high to, and it really shocked me.
I have a couple of birds still see, such as passage and summer migrants but I think this is very close to my overall year total so I won't see many new birds now.

I had one new summer visitor, just in recently- a yellow Wagtail, along with a Whimbrel which is new so can I move up to 193 please?
Thanks :)

The Durham Wanderers Return

I had a cracking long weekend in Speyside in Scotland.
Lifers:
235 – Capercaillie – 1 male at Loch Garden RSPB
236 – Crested Tit – at least 3 at Loch ???? (can’t remember the name)
237 – Ptarmigan - 5 at the Cairngorm mountains

Year ticks (not in order):
152 – Osprey – 2 in Lothian on way to Speyside!
153 – Black-throated Diver – summer plumage but can’t remember name of the location.
154 – Slavonian Grebe – Loch Ruthven RSPB
155 – Long-tailed Duck – Musselburgh in Lothian
156 – Velvet Scoter - Musselburgh in Lothian
157 – Ptarmigan - 5 at the Cairngorm mountains
158 – Capercaillie – 1 male at Loch Garden RSPB
159 – Common Sandpiper – same place as Black-throated Divers.
160 – Crested Tit – at least 3 at Loch ???? (can’t remember the name)

So my new total is 160. Not quite as good as BirdingManiac but a cracking weekend and Saturday was my best days birdwatching ever so far in my life.

Not ticks but other fantastic birds seen where: about 8 Ospreys, 1 Golden Eagle, 1 Goshawk, numerous Buzzard, summer plum Red-throated Diver, 2 Short-eared Owl, 3 Hen Harrier + sky dancing, 1 fem Black Grouse, and much more. Me and the lads from the bird club clocked about 100 species over 3 days.

Hi there i am not really doubting you it's certainly a exceptional total for this time of year. Norfolk is a excellent place for picking up year ticks like Stone Curlew,Woodlark ,Bearded Tit,Bittern,Crane,Golden Pheasant,RL Partridge etc.

Sounds like you had a good time as well Joseph, I've had a quick read through your post and it certainly was a jam-packed easter. No reason for you to be bored! I'll finish off reading and comment a bit later as I'm afraid I'm one of those lackadaisical teenagers :p.

Well done Andrew some great species. As I suspected I've been pushed down to 7th place and I think Lancashire are getting slightly beaten by Durham:-C

Still not having much luck. I realised I had miscounted and was actually on 103. I am now up to 114 after a fairly good day at Dungeness on the 14th with a summer plumaged Slavonian Grebe and my first ever Black Redstart, among others. I also had a pretty awful day at Rainham last Friday where I added two to my year list, Little Ringed Plover and Sand Martin. It will get better soon, I'm sure

now you're just rubbin it in!!;)

Out of interest, what are the rarest birds people have seen/found this year? For me the Bonaparte's Gull at Arlington Res yesterday was the rarest by far, and my best finds have been Cattle Egret, Glaucous Gull and Water Pipit (all rare enough to warrant a description for the local comittee, although since I co-found the Glauc dad is doing that desciption). However, finding my own breeding pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers beat the c**p out of the others, they are almost on the verge of exctinction now in Sussex so a new breeding location being found is absolutely fantastic!

The three rarest birds I've seen so far this year are undoubtedly Lesser Scaup, Glossy Ibis and Great Grey Shrike, all lovely birds to see. The most noteworthy birds otherwise for me I have seen this year are Firecrest, Greenland White-fronted Goose (rare up here), Bewick's Swan (also rare up here), Dartford Warbler, Spoonbill, Bittern, Iceland Gull, Med Gull and Water Pipit. As you can see, none of those birds in the second list are that rare, which I'm happy about as it means I've managed to see a lot of tricky birds but not seen many birds that are as rare as the first three. At my present total of 166 that leaves me hopefully with quite a few birds of Glossy Ibis rarity status and above to see this year. I'm looking forward to finding out what those species will be. ;)

By the way well done on a successful trip to Speyside Andrew. ;)

Hi everyone , well done on reaching some fantastic totals , and we are only in April , congrats to Birding Maniac for taking the lead :t:

It would be interesting to see what the total amount of different species that have been seen by everyone put together , think it would be a pretty high total ???
Really great pics of the Hoopoe Jonny , i managed to see one on Portland this year but it was abit distant for a photo
